I essentially agree with this. Which is why it makes good sense (to me)
for new systems starting from scratch to go with H.264 (such as Euro
HDTV and New Zealand TV). Although I'm not entirely sure how one can
overcome the I-frame sync-up time problem, since spreading out the
I-frames is one of the most important bandwidth compression techniques.
Perhaps there's a way of creating a rough image of sorts, using only B
and P frames, and then have that image become accurate after the I frame
arrives. Perhaps one can start with a gray scale stand-in I-frame, for
instance.
Still, to imply that as of today Euro HDTV cannot be done without H.264
is clearly wrong. The initial introduction of HDTV, at least, will
happen with bit rates that are comparable to what they would have been
with H.262.
BTW, just as an aside, I am so pleased with the reception of DTT with my
new indoor quadruple-bowtie antenna, even on the first floor, that I
removed my old chimney-mounted antenna last night. (With much approval
from my wife.) Maybe in the future I will mount a similar panel antenna
lower down, on the sides of the chimney, where it's easier to reach, for
the weaker distant stations.
