We have seen now, on more than one occasion, specific examples where the
bit rates required of H.264 HDTV, IN PRACTICE, *do not* vary appreciably
from the bit rates required of H.262 compression.
MPEG4 Layer 10 has so many tools in it's toolbox that such a blanket
statement may have been true in the past, but cannot be made about the
future. Just as processing power increases has improved the echo
cancellation performance of 8-VSB receivers, the same processing power
improvements will increase the ability of an encoder to employ all of the
MPEG4 Layer 10 tools.
Most full motion video H.264 demos to date have barely scratched the surface
of what is possible in terms of both bitrate reduction and quality
improvement. As processing power increases, there is more time between
frames for the compression engine to further refine it's compression
estimations for a given GOP, improving quality or maintaining quality at a
lower bitrate.
Be patient, Bert, and the advantages of H.264 over MPEG2 will be more and
more apparent at time goes on.
John
