Mark Aitken pointed out that the CE industry is critical of
broadcasters, and when it comes to helping broadcasters to advance
the DTV transition, they are often missing in action.

As long as broadcasters expect the CE industry and multi-channel
subscription services to carry their water, this is unlikely to
change. The cable industry is experiencing a digital gold rush,
deploying millions of cable modems and digital STBs, a high
percentage of which have PVRs. The CE industry is trying to get a
chunk of this lucrative market, even as they work hand-in-hand with
the DBS services to deploy receivers with PVRs.

The only benefit to CE vendors in pushing integrated sets is that
they are getting a foothold in the cable business. There is NO
economic benefit to these manufacturers from the ATSC receiver, only
additional cost for something that most consumer will not use.

What would you do if you were in their shoes?

Would you try to help broadcasters resuscitate their current lame
vision of Free TV?

On the other hand, if broadcasters worked together to deliver a
multi-channel service like Freeview, with additional premium service
tiers, they would find a willing partner in the CE industry that
would help them promote these services in return for a small piece of
the action.
