I think that this "uniform field strength" topic is blown
way out of propotion. Outdoor antennas are entirely
commonplace in Europe, if anything much more so than in the
US, even before cable happened over here. Evidently, we're
talking minor differences, in practice.

Also must not discount the govt involvement in building the
infrastructure, by the way. It's not clear to me how the
designs would change if all the infrastructure costs were
borne from broadcaster revenues.
