- Follow-ups:

     - ***The Technology Retreat***, February 21-24 in Rancho Mirage -
<http://www.hpaonline.com>
          - Don't forget the joint ATSC/SBE seminar on digital newsgathering on
February 21:
<http://broadcastengineering.com/newsletters/eng_update/20051212/#agenda>
     FYI, although the press releases say it's the 11th ***Technology
Retreat***, it's actually the 12th.
          - The modern version of HDTV, it's generally acknowledged, came from
NHK, the Japan Broadcasting Corporation. Then they went beyond HDTV to SHDTV,
with four times more pixels, and UDTV, with four times more than that.
5.1-channel sound? They're so far beyond that, it's scary! But all of that is
what we already know about. What's new at NHK? Come hear Hiroshi Shimamoto
explain advanced research at NHK.
     For that SHDTV system, Olympus built a camera. We don't hear much about
Olympus and super-HDTV on this side of the Pacific. Come and learn what
they've been doing.
     What's happened to ARRI's D20 since it ceased being a prototype? Learn
the latest on digital cinematography at the large-format/high-rez session,
introduced and coordinated by Stephen Stough of Lockheed Martin.
     How about 3-D? Recent developments include NBC's "Medium" and, in
theaters, "Chicken Little." What's involved in shooting for 3-D? How about
post production? Learn all about it at the 3-D session!
     Digital cinema is real! Learn from such studios as Sony and Universal
what they had to do to create the digital-cinema packages of such movies as
"Rent," "Serenity," and more.
     Is the European Digital Cinema Forum's level three to be taken seriously?
Learn from the chair of the EDCF technical module. What's going on at Keio
University in Japan? Come and find out.
     Meanwhile, down in the trenches, producers of 4:3 material may have it
included in "pillarbox" form in widescreen programming, but, when the
widescreen programming is carried as letterbox, the original 4:3 material
shrinks to the size of a postage stamp. Is there a solution? Does it involve
the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the Advanced Television Systems
Committee (ATSC), and SMPTE? Will it work? Listen, and decide!
     Those are just a few recent additions to the main program. It's now full
(more in the next memo), but, although we're currently up to 27 breakfast
roundtables, there's still room for more. Here are the latest additions:
          - Thomas Bremond of SmartJog USA will be moderating a table on new
global digital delivery models in the post-production environment for tapeless
workflows (dubbing, 2K film trailers, VFX, broadcast material, etc.). Sony's
Gary Mandle will be comparing CRT and LCD displays, and Sony's Hugo Gaggioni
will be introducing XDCAM HD. Rainer Knebel of Ascent Media will be examining
the promise of the "universal DI master;" is it reality or fiction? Chris
Lennon of Harris will be explaining how to implement PMCP in a facility to
enable full compliance with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules
regarding PSIP. He'll also be discussing upcoming enhancements to PMCP. Then,
the next day, he'll be moderating a roundtable on SMPTE S22-10, an upcoming
standard to enable "revolutionary" new workflows in broadcast facilities among
traffic, automation, and content-distribution systems.
          - Registrations are pouring in, and there IS a limit to how many we
will accept, so register NOW! Don't say you haven't been warned:

     - TV on iPods and similar devices - This story covers do-it-yourself
recording of more shows on computers:
<http://news.com.com/2100-1026-5994073.html>
     What do broadcasters think of this? Why not ask them yourselves at the
broadcasters panel at ***The Technology Retreat***?
<http://www.hpaonline.com>

     - Advanced consumer disks -
          - Yes, there's will be a main-program session on them at ***The
Technology Retreat***, as well as two breakfast roundtables:
<http://www.hpaonline.com>
          - Warren Communications News reported Friday that an HDTV disk
standard has advanced in China with government approval of a "home-grown" AV
codec. The story is no longer on their site <http://www.warren-news.com>, but
you could learn more at the compression-update and next-generation disk
sessions at ***The Technology Retreat***. BE THERE!
<http://www.hpaonline.com>
          - Toshiba this week said the introduction of HD DVD has been delayed
by the unavailability of Advanced Access Content System (AACS) licensing. This
story is from EE Times:
<http://tinyurl.com/cjk6k>
     Licensing is just one topic that's been covered at previous ***Technology
Retreats***. Content control is another (the 2005 demo room even had the
approved DVD players for Academy Awards screeners). Come and learn!
<http://www.hpaonline.com>
     In a somewhat related story, according to Princeton computer science
professor Ed Felten, the patch that Sony/BMG came up with to fix the problems
caused by the content protection they put on some CDs could make computers
vulnerable to attacks:
<http://broadcastengineering.com/newsletters/scm/20051213/#Sony>
     Sigh! If only they'd come to ***The Technology Retreat*** to ask the
right questions, none of that need have happened:

     - The High-Definition Audio-Video Network Alliance - HANA is growing. At
a press conference, they offered these goals of what they want to enable
consumers to do:
         - View, pause and record 5+ HD channels simultaneously without
compromising quality of service;
         - View, pause and record HD anywhere in the home with just one set top
box;
         - Share personal content from PCs to AV devices while keeping
protected content secure;
         - Control all AV devices and access content with just a single remote
per room; and
         - Add any device to the home network with just one cable:

     I'm not 100% sure, but I think they might be represented at ***The
Technology Retreat***, too.

     - July 1 -
          - Computer makers may be getting sensitive to their position with
regard to the mandate. CompUSA's ad supplement this week had the legend "TV
tuner sold separately" on several models.
          - This week I've listed 168 ads for TVs 36-inch or larger. Of those,
137 (82%) have integrated DTT-reception capability.  As of July 1, 100% of
those manufactured in or imported to the U.S. and equipped with tuners were
supposed to have integrated DTT-reception capability. I've also listed 79 ads
for TVs between 25- and 35-inch. Of those, 20 (25%) have integrated
DTT-reception capability. As of July 1, 50% of those manufactured in or
imported to the U.S. and equipped with tuners were supposed to have integrated
DTT-reception capability. In both cases, I've given the benefit of the doubt
to non-specified models without model numbers.
          - See also the ads section for inexpensive non-integrated sets that
are HD and/or widescreen.

          - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.

     - May 1 -
          - The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has finally updated
its list to 1537 U.S. DTT stations operating in 211 markets:
<http://www.nab.org/newsroom/issues/digitaltv/dtvstations.asp>
          - Doug Lung's RF Report found 826 licensed U.S. DTT stations in the
FCC CDBS database as of December 5:
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/dlrf/one.php?id=1099>
     For comparison, compare those numbers to the ones the FCC finally released
for analog stations as of September 30:
          - Full-power stations - 1749 (1034 UHF and 715 VHF)
          - Class A stations ----  593 (485 UHF and 108 VHF)
          - Other low-power ----- 2117 (1621 UHF and 696 VHF)
          - Translators --------- 4503 (2678 UHF and 1825 VHF)
     That's 8,962 U.S. analog TV transmitters:

- Point.360 is now offering HD transmission service for spots, syndicated
programs, and special events:
<http://www.broadcastnewsroom.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=36236>

- International H/DTV news:

     - Clear days on the Canadian H/DTV scene:
          - Bell Canada says its ExpressVu service offers "the most HD content"
in Canada, according to this story in Broadcaster magazine:
<http://tinyurl.com/7rfhb>
     But the same publication says Rogers offers "the widest selection of HD
channels in Canada":
<http://tinyurl.com/9as2s>
          - Meanwhile, Digital Home Canada offers a tutorial to answer the
question, "What do I need to watch High Definition programming?" Their
conclusion is:
     "In order to watch high definition television or HDTV a consumer will need
three things:
"A Satellite or Cable program subscription to HD Programming;
"An HDTV Satellite Receiver or Digital Set Top Box;
"A high definition television set (HDTV).
"Remember if you don't have all three you won't be watching HDTV!"

     Hmm.  What about DTT transmissions?

     - In the UK, according to regulator Ofcom, DTT continues to be the
fastest-growing segment of the multichannel universe, which, including analog
cable, represented 68.5% of households at the end of September. Sky's
satellite service has a 48.7% share of those multichannel homes, but that's
down from 53.6% last year. Freeview DTT is up to about 23% with 5.775 million
households (another 545,000 get free satellite service):
<http://www.ofcom.org.uk/research/tv/reports/dtv/dtu_2005_q3/q3_2005.pdf>

     - TVB Europe reports that ProSiebenSat.1 Group, which has been
transmitting free-to-view HD, will be upconverting standard-definition material:
<http://tinyurl.com/dj535>

     - In Spain, Telefonica will be delivering HD via VDSL phone lines:
<http://www.telecompaper.com/news/article.aspx?id=108390&nr=272&type=&yr=>

     - Here's a URL for a story with more on China's compression system, called
AVS (for audio-video coding). It has been approved by the Ministry of
Information Industry, with, with the Ministry of Science and Technology, has
been supporting its development committee since 2002. A key point is said to
be that it will save more than a billion U.S. dollars in licensing fees:

     Meanwhile, Analysis International says "MPEG-4" will likely be chosen for
IPTV in China:

     - This story covers HD in Singapore:
<http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/technologynews/view/183366/1/.html>

     - The latest list from Australia shows 77 models of DTT receivers from 23
brands, starting at A$99 (US$74). Of those, 24 from 17 brands are HD, now
starting as low as A$299 (US$223):
<http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?sectionID=18>

- U.S. patent No. 6,975,689, titled Digital Modulation Signal Receiver With
Adaptive Channel Equalization Employing Discrete Fourier Transforms, came out
this week. The inventors are OpenDTV Forum contributors Doug McDonald and Al
Limberg. It should be able to improve U.S. DTT reception:
<http://tinyurl.com/9z7du>

- Based on figures from CEA, sales to U.S. dealers of non-H/DTV television sets
for the first 46 weeks of 2005 were down 12.2% from the same period in 2004; my
ten-week running average was also down 16%. For the first 47 weeks it was
12.1% and, for the ten-week running average, 16.6%.
     Sales of so-called non-flat-panel "Digital Televisions" to U.S. dealers
for the 46th week were 94,913 units, for the 47th week 119,736 units and for
the first 47 weeks 3,800,372 (compared to 18,508,407 for non-flat-panel sets
not called "digital" by CEA). For 20 of the last 23 weeks, the number of
non-flat-panel "digital televisions" sold to U.S. dealers was lower than in the
same period last year.
     "Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without
DTT-reception capability) accounted for about 17% of the non-flat-panel TVs
sold to U.S. dealers through the 47th week this year. Based on CEA's report of
unit sales through the end of June including flat-panel displays, the total
"digital" percentage (assuming no flat-panel non-"digital" TVs) would be 32.4%.
 It may be worth noting here what that means. About 67% of the TVs sold
through the 47th week this year were still plain non-H/DTV direct-view TVs with
picture tubes, and that percentage is still increasing slightly.
     To qualify to CEA as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of
receiving DTT signals are still a small fraction of those numbers. CEA says
that, through June, about 85% of "digital televisions" were HDTV.
     For the latest, full-year, more-complete CEA data on sales and household
penetration, come to ***The Technology Retreat***. Yes, ***The Technology
Retreat***.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of only the DirecTV units at
CompUSA (and Good Guys) and Ultimate Electronics and a Sony at Great Indoors.
If there are more out there, they are certainly hiding pretty well.

- Ad confusions: Computers & Electronics Warehouse called the Panasonic
TC20LA5 "16:9 widescreen" (it's 4:3). Flat Universe called the Panasonic
non-HD TH42PD50 "HDTV Comp."  J&R called the Canon LV-5220 800 x 600 projector
"HDTV Supported;" it would show a 16:9 image as 800 x 450. In the opposite
direction, Best Buy called its mystery-brand KLC-1508U 15-inch 1024 x 768 LCD
TV an "EDTV" (but not a monitor).
     Incidentally, it appears that "HDTV compatible" and "HDTV supported" are
now regularly used for displays with only standard-definition resolution, and
even "HDTV built-in" is sometimes used simply to indicate the presence of
DTT-reception circuitry.
