[opendtv] Re: 20050926 Mark's Monday Memo

Barry,

All I'm saying, and I've beaten this horse to death and don't really enjoy
banging my head against the wall further, is that DVB-T offers so many
choices to the broadcaster as to how robust s/he wishes to make her/his
signal vs. how much payload s/he wishes to deliver, that it makes more sense
to me as a broadcaster.

We sometimes go to low power during maintenance, or as we had to do when our
new DTV antenna decided to revert to carbon form, we will be at reduced
power on a standby antenna at lower height for an extended period of time.
It would have been nice to be able to have the option to reduce our payload
in order to increase our coverage (s/n margin) during that extended low
power operation period. It would also be nice to be able to go to such a
mode during emergencies. It would be nice to be able to broadcast to DVB-H
devices directly without the user having to subscribe to Crown Castle.

Not even E-VSB will live on in any practical sense, so all this is moot for
the U.S. Arrogance won out over common sense.

John
