[opendtv] 20050926 Mark's Monday Memo

     Here are some very efficient (low-administrative-cost) relief
organizations (all have four-star ratings from CharityNavigator.org):

<http://www.redcross.org/donate/donate.html>
<http://www.directrelief.org/index.html>

     I understand the Red Cross web site is often busy. Americans may also
call 800 HELP NOW (800 435-7669).

- Follow-ups:

     - Analog off by 2007 due to Katrina - In addition to Senator John McCain
pushing the idea in the Senate, Representatives Curt Weldon and Jane Harman are
pushing it in the House (H.R. 1646) -- but at least their bill is only for the
public-safety channels 63, 64, 68, and 69:
<http://broadcastengineering.com/newsletters/bth/20050925/#>
     Broadcast Engineering's Beyond the Headlines newsletter also published my
opposing view:
<http://broadcastengineering.com/newsletters/bth/20050925/#McCain>
     If you care about analog TV being shut down by the end of 2006, I'd
suggest contacting your senators and representative with your opinions on the
subject. The bills are expected to become amendments (successful or not) to a
budget bill within the next few weeks.

     - CEA's mid-year figures - The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has
confirmed that the difference between the 3.8 million "DTV" sales to dealers
through the end of June in their recent press release and the 2 million in
their weekly reports to that date is that the weekly reports do not include LCD
or plasma:
<http://www.ce.org/Press/CurrentNews/press_release_detail.asp?id=10832>
     That gives us a new benchmark. With flat-panel displays added, the
"digital" proportion of TV sales to dealers (either DTT-equipped or capable of
dealing with at least 480p) rises from 17% to 32.4% in sales this year through
the end of June.

     - DisplaySearch HD conference - A poll taken among the professionals
attending found 93% stating they had seen compression artifacts while watching
HD:
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/hd_notebook/one.php?id=433>

     - USDTV - The multichannel DTT service is getting about $26 million in
funding from major broadcast groups, including Fox, Hearst-Argyle, McGraw-Hill,
and LIN TV. They hope to open in a fourth market by year end:
<http://tinyurl.com/7jhzp>

     - The sub-$400 DTT set - The made-in-China 27-inch RCA set is expected to
go on sale at Wal-Mart for $359 in a few weeks. The full story requires a paid
subscription:
<http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6260370.html?display=Top+Stories>
     This week, I list a 27-inch non-DTT RCA TV at Kmart for $189.99,
indicating a $170 premium for the DTT reception.  Wal-Mart has a 27-inch
flat-tube RCA TV for $219.

     - TV to mobile devices - Broadcasting & Cable has a couple of stories on
the status of the industry in the U.S. They do NOT require a paid subscription
to read:
<http://tinyurl.com/dwgl4>
<http://tinyurl.com/9rv6d>
     Here's a story with a European perspective:
<http://www.unstrung.com/document.asp?doc_id=81191&WT.svl=news3_3>
     And this story covers a demonstration in Oxford of a 16-channel service,
including all UK terrestrial analog channels, going to 400 residents with Nokia
7710 phones:
<http://news.zdnet.co.uk/communications/networks/0,39020345,39221286,00.htm>
     Finally, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is allowing WLNY, a
popular New York-area movie station, to give up its channel 55 early and
"flash-cut" to DTT so that Qualcomm can use the channel for its MediaFLO
service. This Broadcasting & Cable story DOES require a paid subscription:

     - July 1 -
          - I was here all week this time and checked all the free tabloids;
there just weren't many ads this week.
          - This week I've listed 108 ads for TVs 36-inch or larger. Of those,
77 (71%) have integrated DTT-reception capability. As of July 1, 100% of those
with tuners manufactured in or imported to the U.S. were supposed to have
integrated DTT-reception capability. I've also listed 55 ads for TVs between
25- and 35-inch.  Of those, 5 (9%) have integrated DTT-reception capability.

- Based on figures from CEA (which were recently revised again), sales to U.S.
dealers of non-H/DTV television sets for the first 35 weeks of 2005 were down
12.2% from the same period in 2004; my ten-week running average was down 23.2%.
     Sales of so-called "Digital Televisions" to U.S. dealers for the 35th week
were 68,259 units and for the first 35 weeks 2,609,087 (compared to 12,709,203
for sets not called "digital" by CEA). For the eight of the last 11 weeks, the
number of "digital televisions" (not counting flat-panel) was lower than in the
same period last year.
     "Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without
DTT-reception capability) accounted for about 17% of the TVs (not counting
plasma or direct-view LCD) sold to U.S. dealers through the 35th week this
year. Based on CEA's report of unit sales through the end of June including
flat-panel displays, the total "digital" percentage would be 32.4%. It may be
worth noting here what that means. About 68% of the TVs sold through the 35th
week this year were still plain non-H/DTV direct-view TVs with picture tubes.
     To qualify to CEA as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of
receiving DTT signals are still a small fraction of those numbers. CEA says
that, through June, about 85% of "digital televisions" were HDTV.

     Stereo Exchange's ad again listed a $1500 rebate on the Fujitsu

rebate, so I've just listed the price.
