- Follow-ups:
- My schedule - Reminder: There will be no memo next week, and the
following week's will be late.
- Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Reauthorization Act - DirecTV will
cut off one coast's HD broadcast network feeds from many subscribers (those not
in the same or an adjacent time zone) next week based on the act's provisions.
- July 1 -
- My Minneapolis-area correspondent is out of town. I returned late
Saturday, and I couldn't find am New York yesterday.
- This week I've listed 98 advertised TVs 36-inch or larger. Of
those, 41 (42%) have integrated DTT-reception capability. As of July 1, 100%
of those manufactured in or imported to the U.S. were supposed to have
integrated DTT-reception capability. I've also listed 58 advertised TVs
between 25- and 35-inch. Of those, 4 (7%) have integrated DTT-reception
capability. As of July 1, 50% of those manufactured in or imported to the U.S.
were supposed to have integrated DTT-reception capability.
- See also the ads section for inexpensive non-integrated sets that
are HD and/or widescreen.

retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.
- May 1 -
- Neither the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) nor the
National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) updated their lists this week.
- According to Doug Lung's RF Report, there were 748 licensed U.S.
DTT stations as of August 14:
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/dlrf/one.php?id=978>
- The FCC has issued its annual inquiry on video competition. Comments are due
September 19 and replies October 3. The first URL is for the press release;
the second is for the Notice of Inquiry:

- "Broadcast TV Will Never Die" is the title of an interesting treatise by
broadcast.com and HDNet founder Mark Cuban. He discusses Internet issues:
<http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=78846&WT.svl=tease1_2>
- The Society of Broadcast Engineers is creating a program for certifying
specialists in 8-VSB:
<http://www.sbe.org/>
- International H/DTV news:
- Yes, DTT has been tested in Tibet:
<http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/200508/11/eng20050811_201717.html>
- Meanwhile, in Japan, where ANALOG HDTV is still being transmitted by
satellite, the government is accepting applications for digital HD programming
to replace it:
<http://asia.news.yahoo.com/050810/kyodo/d8bt0akg1.html>
- You may think analog HD sounds like old technology (it is; I worked on
the first regularly scheduled transmission in June 1989), but Japan has already
gone way beyond HDTV to UDTV (16 times the number of pixels of 1080-line HDTV).
Now they're going beyond that to 3-D, aromatic, tactile HD, with a goal of
commercialization by 2020. This story is from Reuters:
<http://tinyurl.com/7s26v>
- In Australia, where DTT household penetration (five to nine percent)
exceeds that of the U.S., it is nevertheless considered too low to allow a 2008
analog cut-off. This story is from the Melbourne Age:
<http://tinyurl.com/73bja>
- Remember when analog composite connections gave way to S-video, which gave
way to analog component, which gave way to DVI, which gave way to HDMI? Well
get ready for the Video Electronic Standards Association's latest effort,
DisplayPort, capable of up to 10.8 Gbps:
<http://news.zdnet.co.uk/0,39020330,39214095,00.htm>
- Much of the trade press has been characterizing a Pioneer-sponsored study
conducted by IDC with the Imaging Science Foundation as indicating that plasma
"burn-in" is an unfounded concern. But the burn-in test involved a static
image left in place for 48 hours, followed by 24 hours of moving video as an
"erasing" signal. Granted plasma technology has improved in this area, but
when a paper on burn-in was presented at the International Conference on
Consumer Electronics, it involved a static image displayed for 5,000 hours
continuously:
<http://tinyurl.com/dt4gk>
The 16-page paper also has some interesting comments on a comparison after
a four-week "accelerated aging" test. Plasma brightness was down 5.5%, but LCD
was down 11.2% and a microdisplay projector down 22.8%. Hmmm:
<http://tinyurl.com/afweb>
- Pacific Media Associates says LCD sales had previously overtaken plasma in
the 32-inch size and have now done so (in May and June) in the 37-inch size,
where LCD prices dropped from an average of $4138 in March to $3126 in June:
<http://www.pacificmediaassociates.com/Press_releases/press_release.htm>
- DisplaySearch says plasma sales worldwide beat rear-projection TVs (but not
in North America). CRT sales dropped 10% from last year but still represent
84% of the market (down from 92% last year). Their press release is chock full
of information on the sales and growth rates of different technologies,
regions, and manufacturers:
<http://www.displaysearch.com/press/?id=393>
- Meanwhile, LG and Samsung are developing new CRT technologies:
<http://www.smdailyjournal.com/article_preview.php?id=47492>
- Based on figures from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), sales to
U.S. dealers of non-H/DTV television sets for the first 30 weeks of 2005 were
down 10% from the same period in 2004; my ten-week running average was down
17.2%.
Sales of so-called "Digital Televisions" to U.S. dealers for the 30th week
were 108,487 and for the first 30 weeks 2,223,996 (compared to 11,258,035 for
sets not called "digital" by CEA and 6,611,833 for DVD players). For the
fourth week in a row, the number of so-called "Digital Televisions" sold for
the week was less than the number sold for the same week last year.
"Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without
DTT-reception capability) accounted for about 16.5% of the TVs (not counting
plasma or direct-view LCD) sold to U.S. dealers through the 30th week this
year. It may be worth noting here what that means. About 84% of the
non-plasma, non-direct-view-LCD TVs sold through the 30th week this year were
still plain non-H/DTV direct-view TVs with picture tubes. The last time CEA
released numbers allowing the LCD and plasma TVs to be included, they raised
the "digital" percentage to about 25%; I suspect it is higher now.
To qualify to CEA as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of
receiving DTT signals are still a small fraction of those numbers.
- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of only the DirecTV-brand units
being advertised this week, but they were at Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA,
and Video & Audio Center.
- Ad confusions: Circuit City labeled the RCA D52W20 as "HD Built-In."
- The ads - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.
Again, my Minneapolis-area correspondent is out of town. I returned late
Saturday, and I couldn't find am New York yesterday.
CompUSA offered a free (after rebate) analog TV tuner with any LCD
monitor. Dell appears to have the same ads in newspapers across the country,
though the prices vary wildly over the course of a week (e.g., from $1299 to
$1799 for the W3000).

three times as many DVD players were sold to dealers this year as so-called
"digital televisions."
