- Bob Turner died July 15. I neglected to mention it last week, perhaps
because I was still in shock from the news. He was 54 and died of lung cancer
despite never smoking. He was a giant of our industry, both figuratively and
literally -- the dean of post-production journalists, the person for whom Avid
reserved the first question at its press conference each year, someone to look
up to. Despite debilitating chemotherapy treatments, he nonetheless made a
trip to share his wisdom as the keynote speaker at SMPTE's Editing Showcase
last month. I'm glad I got to see him then. I still can't believe I won't be
able to take advantage of his warmth, knowledge, and insight in the future.
His family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society, sent to the

- Follow-ups:
- DTT and the environment -
- Warren Communication News reported today about Senate testimony to
the effect that the DTT transition, by making analog TVs obsolete, could add a
billion lbs. of lead to waste streams. The story will be on their site until
tomorrow morning:
<http://www.warren-news.com/>
- In a somewhat related story, Lyra Research is proposing that
consumers be allowed to trade in analog sets for DTT adapters, thus dealing
with two sets for every adapter:
<http://lyra6.lyra.com/DTVView/AnalogTVKilledfullstory.html>
- DTT reception-circuitry availability - Here's a story on the lack:
<http://www.njtelecomupdate.com/lenya/telco/live/tb-IBKL1121892013653.html>
- Japan's areas unserved by DTT - In addition to satellite, the Internet
may be used:
<http://asia.news.yahoo.com/050721/3/24aq5.html>
- U.S. H/DTV penetration - Jupiter Research says there were 13 million
HDTV displays in the U.S. at the end of 2004 but less than four million
households were getting any HDTV to show on them:
<http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/050721/215469.html?.v=1>
- U.S. stations dropping analog ahead of schedule - Doug Lung's RF Report
mentions a few more in the 700 MHz range, assisted by Qualcomm:

- July 1 -
- I'm back in New York for a while. This week's ads are not a normal
batch, but they're getting there.
- This week I've listed 80 advertised TVs 36-inch or larger. Of
those, 42 (53%) have integrated DTT-reception capability. I've also listed 48
advertised TVs 25-to-35-inch. At this point, it's supposed to be 100% of
factory sales. Of those seven (15%) have integrated DTT-reception capability.
At this point, it's supposed to be 50% of factory sales.
- See also the ads section for inexpensive non-integrated sets that
are HD and/or widescreen.

- May 1 - Nothing I check has been updated since the last memo.
- The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) has approved a revision of
the A/52 standard to include enhanced AC-3 (E-AC-3). The first URL is for the
press release. The second is for the standard:

- I don't usually mention HD programming, but I thought it was interesting that
Jacob Luft, in Sports Illustrated, listed ten HD shows having nothing to do
with sports:
<http://tinyurl.com/8mpay>
And TV critic Tom Shales seems to have decided that HD is worth watching even
when there's nothing to watch:

In related news, according to a survey of 1100 HD cable & satellite
subscribers by Frank N. Magid Associates conducted on behalf of INHD:
- 71% were satisfied with their cable HD service,
- 90% were satisfied with picture quality and 80% with audio quality,
- a quarter were satisfied with the quantity of HD programming, and
- 97% are likely to continue to subscribe.

- In the UK, there seems to be concern that, now that they're got the 2012
Olympic Games, maybe that's not the best year to end analog TV. This story is
from TheBusiness.com:

- The UK DTT-transition experiment in Wales -
- According to government reports, all went extremely well, "with no
major transmission issues," and:
- 81% of participants able to install equipment without help
from the testing team,
- 99.2% voting to stay digital, and even those "over 90 years
old using digital recording facilities."
Here's the summary:
<http://www.culture.gov.uk/global/press_notices/archive_2005/dcms101_005.htm>
The full 65-page report also notes that 23% needed a new antenna and
another 22% needed work on their existing antenna system:
<http://tinyurl.com/bsodm>
- IC Wales reports that the experiment might not be as successful as
has been reported. Many people are reportedly complaining of signal problems
after the experiment was over, forcing them to go to satellite:

- Here are two reports from the Internationale Funkausstellung, sort of
the European version of the Consumer Electronics Show:

- The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is investigating whether it
should mandate DTT reception for TVs smaller than 13-inches. TV Technology's
"Masked Engineer" has comments on the subject:
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/features/Masked-Engineer/f_mario_orazio.shtml>
- Non-masked Charlie Rhodes has an even more interesting piece in TV
Technology. Here's an excerpt:
"This brings us to double conversion tuners like the type Zenith designed
for testing its 8-VSB DTV modulation technology. It was the outstanding
interference rejection of that double-conversion tuner that led the FCC to
conclude that the UHF taboos did not apply to DTV":

- Gateway is leaving the TV business:
<http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1839273,00.asp>
- According to market researcher Current Analysis, 57% of U.S. retailer
product-placement shelf space for TVs 30-inch and larger is devoted to
rear-projection sets, 29% to plasma, and 14% to LCD:

- I'm not permitted to release CEA figures for the 27th week until tomorrow.
- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of only the DirecTV models at Best
Buy and Ultimate Electronics.
- The ads - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.
Ultimate noted that the Panasonic TH37PX50U "displays over 8 billion
colors." I wonder. Are there over eight billion distinguishable colors?

- DVD news:
- I'm not permitted to release CEA figures for week 27 until tomorrow.

actually ROSE 6% in the first half of 2005 compared to the same period of 2004,
though they dropped in the second quarter:
<http://www.twice.com/article/CA630262?display=Breaking+News>
That's not what I've seen in CEA's figures.
- For what it's worth, Spanish-language WXTV's (Univision) 6 pm newscast
yesterday won its time slot in the New York market, beating WABC. The full
story requires a paid subscription:
