[opendtv] 20050226 Schubin's Saturday Stuff (Mark's Monday Memo)

     Here are some very efficient (low-administrative-cost) relief
organizations (all have four-star ratings from CharityNavigator.org):

Sorry about the delay. I'll try to get the next one out on time.

I'm trying something new with long URLs. Please let me know if you have
any trouble with the links. Thanks to Chris Fehring at Pixar!

- Follow-ups:

     - DTT cable carriage -
          - After the Super Bowl, talks between Comcast and Sinclair broke
down, so Sinclair DTT stations have been pulled from Comcast cable systems:
<http://tinyurl.com/4w9kz>
          - The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) decision might not
be the last word. House Telecommunications and the Internet subcommittee
chair Fred Upton said on C-SPAN's "Washington Journal" that if negotiations
fail (see above) legislators might step in. The complete story requires a
paid subscription:
<http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA504727.html?display=Breaking+News>
          - Paxson is reportedly considering requests to the FCC in view of
the rejection that could include using other-than-8VSB modulation. The

     - House "hard-date" hearing -
          - Energy and Commerce Committee chair Joe Barton is said to have
15 TV sets in his three homes and three offices in Texas and D.C.:
<http://tinyurl.com/5ax5v>
          - Here is TV Technology's version of a story he told at the
hearing about TV shopping (it is confirmed by other media reports):
     "His wife, apparently considering him TV deficient, gave him a $300
voucher for Christmas -- for a television set. Barton proceeded to the
electronics store, where he asked for 'the best TV I can get for $300,' and
the salesman started showing him analog sets. Barton asked about digital
sets, to which the response was, 'you said you wanted the best set you
could get for $300.' 'But what about Congress setting a deadline?' Barton
said he asked the salesman, who replied, 'ah, they'll never do that,' and
thus, the congressman bent on setting an analog deadline bought a $300
analog television set":
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/dailynews/one.php?id=2754>
          - There seemed to be general agreement on the NAB's figure of 73
million TV sets relying on analog broadcast signals (that doesn't count
VCRs). Representative Rick Boucher said that the cost of subsidizing them
would be $7.3 billion, considerably more than the $4 billion hoped for from
the auction of the freed analog channels. LG Electronics vp Jong Kim said
the cost of set-top boxes could drop to $50 by 2008, "assuming
industry-wide demand for millions of units by then":
<http://www.tvweek.com/news.cms?newsId=7329>
          - According to the Government Accounting Office, roughly 21
million U.S. households (about 19%) rely exclusively on over-the-air
broadcasts, a figure that differs from that in the recent FCC multichannel
competition report. They are said to be disproportionately poor,
non-white, and Hispanic:
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/dailynews/one.php?id=2754>
          - Barton plans to push for a hard cut-off at the end of 2006 with
subsidized receivers. Other legislators are opposed to a hard date:
<http://www.tvweek.com/news.cms?newsId=7329>
          - Representative Ed Markey commented that "Congress is a
stimulus-response organism, and nothing is more stimulating than millions
of consumers demanding to know why they can't watch their favorite show on
Sunday." He compared the number of households who might be cut off with
the entire population of France. "We can't just say to these people c'est
la vie." Representative Greg Walden said, "If we drop the hammer on
consumers, the sledgehammer is going to come back and hit us." Those were
from the Hollywood Reporter:

Electronics (TWICE):

<http://www.twice.com/article/CA505331?display=Breaking+News>
          - Jim Yager, CEO of Barrington Broadcasting, testifying on behalf
of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), raised the labeling
issue: "It is unconscionable that every year another 30 million
analog-only sets are sold to unsuspecting consumers... without any warning
that the product may soon be obsolete. Under the current tuner phase-in
schedule, analog-only sets will continue to be sold until July of 2007":
<http://www.nab.org/Newsroom/PressRel/speeches/021705DTVHouseTestimony.htm>
          - Michael Willner, CEO of Insight Communications, testifying on
behalf of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA),
acknowledged that only 504 U.S. DTT stations are currently carried by any
U.S. cable systems. He said Motorola "currently estimates" the cost of a
DTT set-top receiver to be $67:

     - May 1 - The NAB updated its list to 1373 U.S. DTT stations in 211
markets as of the 18th (compare to the 504 carried on cable):
<http://www.nab.org/newsroom/issues/digitaltv/dtvstations.asp>
     The FCC did not update its lists this week.

- There's an article by Charles Rhodes on attenuation issues in 8-VSB
receivers in TV Technology. He discusses the paper he co-authored at the
IEEE Broadcast Symposium:

- The "broadcast flag" court case:

     - The New York Times has an overview:
<http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/21/technology/21flag.html>

     - Many sources reported that the judges seemed to be unfavorable to
the FCC position (but that doesn't necessarily predict their decision):
<http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory?id=524126&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312>

     - The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has released an "HD PVR
Cookbook" and is encouraging "Build-Ins" (parties at which people construct
HD recorders unfettered by the broadcast flag). The first URL is for a
story about what they're doing, the second about the "cookbook," and the
third about the "Build-Ins" (with free T-shirts):

     Is it worth mentioning here that it takes only one unprotected device
to post content to the Internet?

- International H/DTV news:

     - It's not just Berlin. Based on Screen Digest figures, Germany
reportedly had over 2.7% DTT household penetration at the end of 2004, up
from 0.53% at the end of 2003. DTT represents more than 39% of the
country's digital households:
<http://www.itfacts.biz/index.php?id=P2651>

     - The Loewe Aventos 3770 ZW, at A$1499 (US$1179), is the lowest-priced
integrated DTT set in Australia:
<http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?display=news&newsID=631>
     The latest list of widescreen TVs in Australia shows 125 models from
15 manufacturers, starting at A$699 (US$550).  Of those, 74 models from 11
manufacturers are HD starting at A$1599 (US$1258), nine models from four
manufacturers have integrated DTT receivers starting at A$1499 (US$1179),
and just one is both HD and DTT at A$10,624 (US$8357):
<http://www.widescreentv.info/products.html>
     A different list of Australian integrated DTVs lists 16 from six
manufacturers starting at A$1499 (US$1179) and six HD from two
manufacturers starting at A$5999 (US$4719). I think the difference is that
the second list has models not yet on sale:
<http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?sectionID=78>

     - This story finds it odd that Namibia has DTT (with, reportedly, only
a few hundred receivers) while South Africa doesn't:
<http://www.finance24.com/Finance/Economy/0,6778,1518-25_1665623,00.html>

     - A dispute over payment may keep some channels from being listed in
some UK newspapers:
<http://media.guardian.co.uk/broadcast/story/0,7493,1417821,00.html>

     - A telephone survey conducted by Decima Research for LG Electronics
Canada found 16 percent HD household penetration, higher than in the U.S.
with less programming available. Maybe so, or maybe this survey is like
those in which 25-40% of U.S. households said they had HDTV -- far more
than had been manufactured:
<http://www.ottawabusinessjournal.com/306401552757091.php>
<http://tinyurl.com/5hhdv>

- DisplaySearch says 8.8 million LCDs were shipped worldwide in 2004. Of
those, 38% were sold in Europe, 27% in Japan, 26% in North America, 4% in
China, and 4% in the rest of the world. In North America, the average size
was 20-inch; elsewhere it was larger:
<http://www.displaysearch.com/press/2005/022405.htm>

- DisplaySearch also reported 2.8 million plasma TVs sold worldwide in
2004. Again, Europe had the highest sales. HD represented 93% of plasma
sales in Japan in the fourth quarter of 2004; in North America it was 42%
and in Europe 38%. 42-inch 480-line models are still more than half of
those sold:
<http://www.displaysearch.com/press/2005/022205.htm>

- Based on figures from CEA, sales to U.S. dealers of non-H/DTV television
sets for the first four weeks of 2005 were down 24.8% from the same period
in 2004 and 19.4% for the first five weeks. I think those figures are
pretty useless; give them some time. My ten-week running average was down
20.2% at the fourth week and 20.6% at the fifth.
     Sales of so-called "Digital Televisions" to U.S. dealers for the
fourth week were 94,374 units and 72,080 for the fifth. Through the fifth
week 340,233 were sold to dealers this year.
     "Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without
DTT-reception capability) accounted for about 16.1% of the TVs (not
counting plasma or direct-view LCD) sold to U.S. dealers through the fourth
week this year and 16.5% though the fifth week. It may be worth noting
here what that means. About 84% of the non-plasma, non-direct-view-LCD TVs
sold through the second week this year were still plain non-H/DTV
direct-view TVs with picture tubes.
     To qualify to CEA as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of
receiving DTT signals are still a small fraction of those numbers.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I am aware of NONE this week, despite
checking more newspapers in more cities.

- Ad confusions:
     - Best Buy said Samsung's HP-P4261 was "Digital cable ready" but had
no ATSC-reception capability. On its web site, B&H Photo said the
opposite. Good Guys's and J&R's sites correctly noted it has neither.
     - Soho Electric's ad seems to say the Samsung HL-M437W is both DLP and
LCD. It also lists it as 42-inch (it's 43) and says it has "ATSC
(Digital)," though it seems not to include DTT reception. It is, in any
case, quite an old model.
     - My correspondent listed the LG DU-42LZ30 at Ken Crane's as not being
integrated.

- DVD news: According to CEA, sales of DVD players to U.S. dealers for the
first four weeks of 2005 were down 39.8% and for the first five weeks down
31.6%. I think those figures are pretty useless; give them time. My
ten-week running average was down 42.1% at the fourth week and down 44.6%
at the fifth. VCR sales were down 53.2% at the fourth week and down 45.9%
at the fifth. Give things at least ten weeks to settle down.

- PVR news: TiVo says it has more than three million subscribers:

- According to a survey by Jupiter Research, American adults spent 10 hours
per week on the Internet, the same as in 2003. TV viewing, however,
declined from 11 hours to 10:

- When a company's survey finds that its product is tops, I take it with a
grain of salt. When it finds it's lower on the list, I take more notice.
The Internet Home Alliance surveyed new home buyers about the technologies
most important to them and found cable/satellite pre-wiring and security
were tops, followed by "structured wiring," multi-zone heating and air
conditioning, and, finally, a wireless computer network:
