[opendtv] Re: 20040921 Twang's Tuesday Tribune (Mark's Monday Memo)

I didn't state that it couldn't be done -- except for film acquisition and
film distribution offshore, L.A. Law circa 1989 was all digital.

You stated that full digital "films" was the rule. I asked for examples
outside of the Lucas world (or even a fourth movie) that proved these were
the rule and not exceptions.

There was another film (I know of no fifth) shot in digital and released
with prints. "Timecode." It was an inspiration for Fox's "24." Since the
first digital star wars episode (does digital help storytelling?) was
released, perhaps as many as 1000 feature films have been released that were
not digitally acquired.

I'll let you know when "films" with prints struck from digital acquisition
formats becomes the rule. Don't hold your breath -- DCI notwithstanding (or
maybe withstanding) it won't be this decade.

John,

Back to the original point, please. You said "...but when the prints are
made, you
still HAVE to start with the negative."

I refuted that by pointing out that Lucas captured digitally, edited
digitally, and made the film master digitally for the latest three Star Wars
movies. You do not HAVE to cut a negative to make prints. If you think you
do, then you need to visit LaserPacific.

Cheers,

John Shutt
