Doug has observed the rather obvious. Release prints, projected with 
run of the mill equipment fall short on delivered resolution. One of 
the biggest factors that robs resolution is gate jitter - successive 
frames USUALLY do not line up perfectly, resulting in a significant 
loss of detail.

That being said, film negative can be very good, and when scanned 
properly, much of the detail can be preserved. Texas Instruments did 
some comparative tests of DLP projectors using the 1280 x 1024 chips, 
with typical cinema projectors, and found that the electronic 
presentation delivers greater detail levels (and none of the crap 
that winds up on film as it is handled).
