The dicussing between Craig and Tom:

Tom is making good sense here, but the bigger point is
that you guys are splitting hairs.

What Mark's memo presented in an interesting way was
that at the Lechner distance, anything above 25" or 31"
(4:3 and 16:9 respectively) requires better quality than
SDTV, for optimal viewing.

All the minutiae about exactly what form of "better
than SDTV" is good enough for a specific TV receiver
is essentially pointless. Broadcasters will base their
decision not on some theoretical optimization of
quality to receiver X, but on what other stuff they
might want to use their multiplex for. Even if their
own productions, such as local news, are not HD
quality, why shouldn't a broadcaster with enough
bandwidth transmit an upconverted version? They will.
There's nothing to lose.

So who cares about whether 576p is good enough for
a 31" set? You just transmit the most bit rate that
can fit in your 6 MHz. As far as the public cares,
anything better than NTSC is just as easily called
HDTV. To me, that's ther only "reality" that applies
here.
