I'm guessing the pipes continue to get bigger but not as fast as the

The ONLY (important) pipes that are getting bigger are the broadband
data pipes. The DBS guys are moving in the direction of higher
efficiency modulation and the cable guys may eventually do the same,
but the real challenge for cable is keeping up with broadband demand
at higher speeds.
Once there is a sustainable high speed pipe into the home, it may be
possible to bypass cable, DBS and broadcast all together. Cox now
offers download speeds up to 12 Mbps. That's enough to download HDTV
content when coupled with a PVR.
Bottom line, broadband is going to change TV distribution before
broadcasters are able to improve encoding efficiency enough to
deliver 1080@60P.
The current writer's strike could be the straw that breaks the
conglomerates back. Can the major networks afford to lose another big
chunk of their traditional audience?
The food supply for the dinosaurs is endangered.
