Last night, Costco was advertizing a 42" 1080p Westinghouse LCD TV for $999. Their site is down right now, so just for grins, I checked Circuit City. 42" 1080p sets are common, and come at a small price premium, or for the same price they often have lower contrast specs. Here are some examples: Toshiba LCD 42" 1366 X 768: $1329.99 Toshiba LCD 42" 1920 X 1080: $1619.99 Samsung LCD 40" 1920 X 1080 with 10,000:1 contrast ratio: $1769.99 Polaroid LCD 42" 1920 X 1080 with 800:1 contrast ratio: $1424.99 LG LCD 42" 1366 X 768 with 8000:1 contrast ratio: $1439.99 So, my take on this is that all else equal, as of now, the premium for 1080p is about $300 over a similar 768p, for this size. But some 1080p sets are cheaper than some 768p sets. And that 40" - 42" seems the smallest size that offers 1080p.
