Then I do not understand the section "3.4. Link Establishment Phase". It
first says that there is an exchange of Configure packets. Then it says this
exchange is "complete" (does this mean an Ack is needed?) and the "LCP
Opened state entered, once a Configure-Ack packet [...] has been both sent
and received.". So, what does this "sent and received" mean then? Is this
referring to the same machine or does the peer receive the packet? How does
the sender know that his packet was received? Through another Ack from the
receiver?
When I look at the state transition table I am a little bit confused. First
the user connects (through an Up&Open event?). Then the restart counter is
initiated (irc) and a Configure-Request is sent (scr) and we go to state 6.
Now, we receive the Ack init the Restart Counter and go to state 7. Only in
state 9 (Opened) we are really connected, so we must receive a
Configure-Request; then we Ack this and initiate a this-layer-up (tlu) and,
as a consequence, enter state 9 (Opened) and can send packets. If the other
Configure-Request is really not needed, how do we enter state 9? At least,
two Configure-Requests would answer the question why the Ack is "both sent
and received".
