Sorry if I'm off topic, just reading this line casted a shadow in my soul. :)
I think one should remember that packets do not have to go through all the
layers of the TCP/IP encapsulation, like for instance shows

diagram is correct, received packets go either up to "network" or
"application" layer. But maybe this diagram isn't perfect and it is possible
to send/receive at datalink level.
