Gentlemen (do we have a lady? i apologize) (please let me know... anyway
to get on the topic), while reading some of the discussion about
Andrew's Calc. Michael pointed out Be has not included a calc app.
Coincidentally I was reading the BeOS Bible and I'll tell you what Be
would have answered:
"Be wants to create a good environment in which third-party developers
can make their livings. If the bundled [insert your favorite here]
application, for instance, did everything that [insert another favorite
here] did, there would be little incentive for other companies to build
BeOS mail clients."
BeOS Bible, Chapter 2: Meet the System pg. 89
It would even go on referring indirectly to m$...
And that was Be's downfall. It used that as an excuse to create great
software [for BeOS]. If there's no great software for an OS, it would
not live. There are already many great ones in Windoze, why the heck
make another one for another OS... even if it is the best when it comes
to structuring and APIs.
Be didn't really understand the problem with m$. M$ is, in a certain
point of view, a great noos-collection of ideas. Their ability to make
things work for minutes with very clumsy software architecture is
amazing. The problem, however, is the business side. They have these
ideas but they tend to corner them for themselves.
Be lived at the exact opposite extreme where m$ lives (where i hope they
will find themselves trapped by their own devices). Be failed to show
the world what its creation is capable of doing.
I'm not suggesting we do go out and do that now... because plainly we
can't. We're still at the stage of recreating the OS (yeah I hear you
saying "stop whining and show us some code"). But let's keep in mind not
to imitate the lameness which became Be's Achilles' Heel. We're
programmers and we'll do what we do best, programming.
Forward on Andrew... and for the rest of us let's give our best to push
towards our 1st Release. Obos, son of Beos, will live forever.
PS. Ow, by the way. Anyone knows a website about a Crash Course on GUI
programming under Be? Better if someone can teach me instead... Thanks
in advance.
Agi
