I can only speculate. Maybe Paul wanted to complete the implementation
first and later tweak the class declaration to make it BC.

Right. But I have to say, that playback of Midi data from a file does
not work properly. The performance time is not calculated correctly.
IIRC it is computed to far in the future...

I don't know. If it uses the same build system as the version from
the FreeType group, then it comes with a makefile and the
binary can be built with "make".
