When I have problems like this, I google a Latin translator...
Ovidus may be a corruption of ovatis which in turn gets one to
(among other things) a kind of crab and small, roundish crabs are
common along the coast.
Many of the things these explorers found were called things that
are no longer in common usage or were labeled with the name of a
common analog from the old country. Once the critter was examined
by a proper taxonomist, the name would be changed and the original
label tossed into the dustbin of history.
