Hi -
I birded among showers this morning. By early afternoon it began to blow and
rain harder.
Highlights:
1. Franklin's Gull. Beautiful adult in alternate plumage. Even in this
morning's subdued light, the pink breast was striking. Fred Ramsey and party
found it late yesterday - This morning Cathy and Dennis Roberts alerted me to
its presence. It was on the little beach directly in front of the main
visitors' parking lot at the Hatfield Marine Science Center.
2. Red-necked Grebes in alternate (Red-necked) plumage. off the south jetty.
3. Odd Bufflehead. I think this bird was an immature male molting into
breeding plumage but several aspects of its appearance suggested a possible
Bufflehead X Hooded Merganser hybrid. I'll work more with my photos and check
more references...
