I also now use NVDA as my only screen reader now on Windows Vista, since it works on Vista even better than JAWS!

Replying to my own message.
I still have Window-eyes oon my PC, however over the last few days, I have been using NVDA for almost everything, even with the AIM web site, which isn't working too badly with it. As the revissions get better and better, I've been straying from using GW Micro's Window-eyes even though I love that screen reader. I've been kinda doing what Michael's doing, using NVDA as my only screen reader. Anyone thinking of making a list of applications that NVDA works with that users could post to it? I actually largely agree with the majority of your statements, but I want to try to keep this relatively on topic with respect to NVDA. My apologies for 
my part in straying...

It is absolutely essential that the blind person come to an employer as
equipped as possible. That's the only way any of us are going to get jobs. 
When I seek employment, I don't ask the employer to spend extra money on
adaptive technology.  Instead, I have already come with screen reader in
hand. Right now, that constitutes JAWS and/or Window-Eyes. Yep. I own both screen readers and keep them current. That's very expensive! My much more difficult employment related issue has been the vast majority of software that still, for many reasons, does *not* work with any screen reader! Right now, JAWS followed by Window-Eyes, has the best chance of working with the most mainstream software on the market. NVDA just isn't there yet. I am 
confident that will change in the future as NVDA is enhanced.
Right now, if NVDA met a blind person's entire needs on any particular job, then, of course, I would recommend NVDA! Otherwise, alas, in most cases, I 
must continue to advise people to plunk down the dough for one of the
leading screen readers.

In time, as NVDA continues to mature, I am quite sure I will change my
stance on all of this.

So how about all of those jobs we as blind people don't get because it would require them to spend thousands of dollars on adaptive software in order to hire the blind person. There are more jobs out there than what is available to a blind person right now. Perhaps there is a little mom and pop store

In fact, I have a friend of mine that did get hired, she works for an affiliate of Goodwill. It was shortly before NVDA existed, this company had to spend 1000 dollars on Jaws, and the only 
thing it requires her to do is to use the internet to access the company
profiling page and write her reports out in MS Word, send it back to the
company via email. For that they had to furnish her with a laptop for her 
field work, buy jaws, buy her a what I would consider a sub par digital
voice recorder because it was one of the few that was usable for the blind. 
Now they have to watch her like a hawk because they have alot of money
invested in her as an employee. Wouldn't it have been much nicer and alot less expensive and alot more attractive to the employer if she would have been able to aquire those items herself? I would think so. She would have been able to get the computer herself, if it were not for the 1000 dollars she needed to spend extra for Jaws. Sometimes people it is just that little 
of an issue that keep us unemployed.

I have never had a job that only required the use of one or two
applications. Also, if a company isn't going to permit the installation 
of
a full screen reader like JAWS or Window-Eyes, then they probably are also 
going to give you trouble with NVDA for some lame reason or another.

As far as a lawsuit, well, that's typically the very last resort rather
than
the first when fighting against a case of discrimination. It has been my experience that most people want good rather than bad publicity, and have managed to resolve most discrimination type issues without even needing to 
resort to the law...  :)

JAWS
on machines at work.  If I am not able to do it myself, then it is a
function performed by the company's IT department. Since a screen reader 
is
often required for a blind / visually impaired person to do their job, it 
is, well, discrimination not to ultimately permit its installation for
that
purpose.

Right, now, I feel NVDA is great for many users for performing their
day-to-day home based computing activities, but, in many cases, it
probably
isn't quite job-ready yet.

I agree! How can a program, Job Access With Speech be called that, if
most
offices won't let people install it at their work place. Even for a
pin-drive, it just doesn't help at all! So honestly, ther's no freedom

Freedom Scientific, if you can't have the freedom to use any computer
anywhere, even at college,  That's not freedom!
The good thing about NVDA? No one will know you're using a screen reader! 
Unless they acctually look on the system tray...
When the next latest version of NVDA comes to the world, that will be on

maybe Freedom Scientific would be the people that need to change the
name
of their screen reader rather than the NVDA team. . Maybe the people 
at
FS can call it Just Another Waste and Spend. Wow hmmm, All they would have to do is add another A. to their logo, contact George Lucas to get permission to use the Jawas as their mascot, and raise the price another 100 dollars per user of their screen reader to cover the cost of doing
