[nvda] questions from a Linux geek, and new-user intro

Hi all,
I haven't used any form of Windows for over 7 years now; I have been
and will remain a Linux person.  However, I'm planning to install
Windows on a laptop for the following reasons.
* The web is becoming all but inaccessible to the text-mode browsers
that I know and love.
* I am a computer science major, so I should have at least some
familiarity with the OS that runs on most PCs.
* Finally, RFB&D is requiring that all its users go digital.  Of
course, there is no Linux software that can cope with their encrypted
talking books, as far as I can tell.
So I've made up my mind to put Windows on at least one of my machines.

Here are my questions.  How well does NVDA work with console
applications?  I'd like to be able to use cygwin or mingw32, and
possibly even Microsoft's command-line compilers.
Second, has anyone here listened to RFB&D digital talking books under
NVDA?
