true.
the issue is I have not found a firewall for incomming and outgoing
protection thats transparent.
or easy to config.
if only I could have say excludes for say folders not to check for
programs or programs I knew to be lagit then maybe I'd be ok, I don't
know.
With security, wireless and other things i get the easiest to impliment.
wep is old tech, but its easy to impliment. its enough for a home
network.
And since all thats really on there for wireless is a wireless laptop
then hmmph.
if it ever gets to the point where it would require extra security, say
we put our laptops on there then in first instance I'll just turn off
file share on the server which with zonealarm blocks everything
including network access anyway and the second which doesn't need to
be on.
In actual fact I probably could turn off all remote access to everything
on all systems except general net and make all lan stuff go away since
after the zonealarm insident and other hacking and things I run updates
and file swaps with an 8gb kingston flash drive on the usb ports of the
systems.
It means I get less issues with time and hastle.
it also means I can update stuff on the systems easier anyway.
If it ever happened we had to use wpa or wpa2 I'd probably try to learn
exactly what it all means, but since we are cable 99% of the time I have
not seen a need.
Its also unlikely we will actually have issue with things.
if it ever happens that someone ever decides to get in from the street,
then as far as I care he can download files all he cares, he can't hack
the router no remote access, and well as I said I probably should
disable file share.
if it ever happens I can probably test how far up and then reduce power
on the router.
If not maybe I can set wpa2 or what ever, if I ever bother, the
interface for dlink is ok but not fantastic.
I keep wireless on the laptop off though if not using.
On that note what is required for setting up wpa2 on say a dlink g604t
if I ever happen to want to set it.

myself I think that unless you need it you should rely on stuff
comming in instead of stuff going out, it needs to get in to be a
threat.
It does mean that you will have to scan all cds/disks/ flash sticks
you b get though.
and maybe email if you have no scanner for it.
however I have never seen the advantage of blocking stuff going out
unless you are unknowingly hacked and never realised you have been
which happens, it happened to me, still these cases are isolated.
A home user is not much of a target hackers or real serious ones look
for businesses.
All that extra security is just asking for trouble.
The only reasons I'd bother with security for incomming and outgoing
would be for shared system access

And things like a laptop in a business environment or university.
over that unless you are a business then I wouldn't bother.
If you are a business or do one yourself.
then I'd try to run as much of the security you can on the server.
In theory this means you shouldn't need to have extra layers on your
