Nice, do you happen to still have that fine reader program? If it is legal
to get it from you or from somewhere I would like to have it myself.
JohnPG search for all of your Jaws scripts at http://www.blindcrawler.com/
Also be sure to check out Blind Crawler's Legend of the Green Dragon server

There will be more to come from Blind Crawler very soon.

Some of the cut-down versions of omnipage or Finereader that often come
with scanners might be an alternative. Also, depending on on the country
of residence, often older versions of the software are avaialble at a much
reduced price and might serve the purpose adequately. For example, a
couple of months ago, a full version of finereader 5.0 Pro came on a cd
with a computer magazine over here and while not the latest in recognition
technology, i used to scan many books using that version of FR and think
it would be quite adequate for many people.

well, I don't think there is currently a good freeware / open source OCR
software, for the simple fact that OCR technology
require a lot of investment in research & developpement, and this costs a
lot of money.
so it will probably take some time before we will ever have an open source
alternative to commercial OCR software.
same actually for text-to-speech, making a good multilingual TTS cost a
lot of money, cause if you want to do it properly one must work with
people specializing in native languages etc. not only computer
programmers.
That's why we don't have yet a good open source multilingual speech
synthesizer.
but I'm sure this will come in the future. if only IBM could make their
technology available as open source.
Maybe we could make a petition.
