[nvda] Re: making an mp3 manual

Hi Jamie,

We may'z well update the manuals that we already have first. When I have half an hour to myself, which won't be today, but maybe tomorrow, I'll start sifting the change logs. The thinking is to take the current manual and the change logs and work backwards, updating the info in the manual with the latest information first, and using the logs as an information gathering tool as well as a sort'a check list. Also, if there's anything in the manual that doesn't apply anymore, take that out.

I'll take help if it's on offer. Email erik@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Documentation experience an ascette, but any english background preferred. I need some one who can not only help with research, but who can proof-read, since spelling and typing accuracy are not necessarily my strong suites.

Best,

Erik

Hi Erik,

I certainly think that such an audio manual would be benefitial for the project and the community. However: * The current NVDA text user guide, readme, etc. are probably significantly out of date. These need to be updated before the release of 0.6. * The text material should probably be updated before the audio manual is completed so that both are synchronised and so that the audio manual does not include outdated information. * Although we are very much aware that the user documentation needs to be updated, neither Mick or I currently have any solid plans to do this. There are many development priorities that keep us from this. * As you know, NVDA is currently changing quite rapidly and there are often very major changes at short notice. This "moving target" makes keeping documentation up to date quite difficult.

All of this poses somewhat of a problem with regard to the creation of an audio manual/tutorial. There are probably many tasks that need to be completed before such an undertaking is practical, but I can give no estimation on when they will be done. Would you be prepared to update the text material as you go? Are there any others out there that would be prepared to help? We'll certainly give all the help we can.

Thanks for your offer and interest.

Hi guys,

Is there interest in an official mp3 manual such as the ones that ship with jaws and window-eyes? The manual would take the novis computer user
through instalations of nvda, walkthroughs ofnvda features and some
compadible programs like firefox and thunderbird, quick reference lists, and such. It would be compiled from the current nvda manual, information
from this list's archive and the wiki.

The next full version of nvda could be released on cd as well as
internet. The cd package could have an installer, the new stable
packages for nvda and nvda mobile, and manuals in mp3 and txt format. It
could even go into computer stores or shops that serve the blind
comunity for some nominal fea like say $10 per disc and become another revinue stream for the project. Linux distro's do this, and I think nvda
will be worthy of a project like that with the next release.

I can do the manual bit here, compiling to recording to formatting, but
it's a big project, and if it's going to be ready for the next full
release it'd have to be started now.

Is there interest in having this?

Thanks,

Erik
