The "intonation" parameter can be included in eSpeak's voice files to
select an alternative intonation module - if somebody writes one :-)
I wrote the original intonation module (source file intonation.cpp)
some time ago, after much experimenting and guessing with the values
and algorithm. So it's a bit of a mess, but it seems to work well for
English and I leave it well alone.
However, a different intonation algorithm might be better for other
languages, or to give some variety to English.
Basically, it takes a sentence with the syllables marked with their
stress level (primary stress, secondary stress, unstressed) and the
type of terminator (comma, period, question, exclamation) and assigns
pitch profiles and pitch levels to the vowels and other voiced sounds.
The aim is not so much natural intonation (because the software doesn't
know the meaning of the text), but something which is plausible and OK
to listen to.
