[nvda] Re: does nvda have a laptop kb layout?

As a follow up to my earlier post about the kbd file, here is an example of what can be done When you read down the list the first entry you will hear is insert+1 Keyboard Help. You can change the hotkey to something like control+1 and save the change and restart NVDA. Keyboard help will then be assigned to control+1 ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Greer" <jpgreer17@xxxxxxxxxxx>

That is why the original idea I proposed to the developers was to just have an option that changed the modifier key. Originally what I proposed was to add a combo box that has desktop layout and laptop layout in there. Actually all it will do is change the assignment of the insert key to possibly the caps lock key because there are some laptops that do not have an insert key. For any adventurous NVDA users out there, if you want to change the keyboard assignments yourself for now, you can find your NVDA folder and go to the app modules folder. in there there is a file called default keyboard.kbd. Open that file in note pad, then you can change the default hotkeys to whatever you want to. Save your changes, restart NVDA and there you go. Mick did inform me that changing the insert key from there could cause problems so just be aware of that. But changing the other keys such as the b in the insert b hotkey should not cause a problem. Have fun and hope this helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Darren Duff" <duff379@xxxxxxxxx>

That's right, and I can attest to this having already trained some people
with NVDA.

For the good computer user this would probably be just fine. But for the
not so savy user having to setup their own keyboard reading keys would
probably turn out to be difficult for them. We need to keep in mind that
for a software to grow in use it needs to be usable by more than just the
savy computer user, and easy enough to use to attract those who might not be
able to afford speech software or the money to pay for training.

why can't we just assign our own nvda key?

If you want to use CapsLock as a modifier, just do what speakup does.
When you want to toggle it hold down the shift key and press the

There are some NVDA commands that use modifier+shift. If we made
shift+modifier pass the key through, you would have to press
modifier+shift+key for those commands; shift+modifier+key wouldn't
work. This makes things pretty complicated and it would be easy to
mess this up. Also, shift has to be passed through to the application
regardless and there are cases where shift+insert would do something
different to just insert. Whatever gets used for pass through needs ot
be consistent.
