one question though, why am i not getting the popup message prompting me to make the selection which i remember i use to get that prompt previously
i have to go to my computer instead and goto my Kingston flash drive and hit the apps key and arrow down to start nvda and hit enter to launch it

here i provide the instruction again and i hope is for the last.

1. click the following URL and download the ready make autorun.inf file

note: if for some reason your browser did not ask for download but show the file content instead, you select all and copy to a new 
notepad file and save it with the name autorun.inf.

2. i assume you don't have NVDA handy, so get a NVDA zip package from

www.nvda-project.org/

note: remember, you must get the zip archive not the exe installer.
3. unzip the NVDA zip package somewhere on your harddrive and please rename the unzip folder to "nvda" without the quote sign.
4. now, you already have the autorun.inf file ready and you also have the nvda program folder ready, copy both into your thumb drive 
root.
5. finally, take off your thumb drive and reinsert it back to your computer. after you hear the USB connection sound, a menu screen will pop-up to ask you what you want windows to do, if you are success, the first option on the menu will be "start NVDA". here is 
the semple of the menu

JETFLASH (L:)
This disk or device contains more than one type of content.
What do you want Windows to do?

Start NVDA using the program provided on the device
Play using Windows Media Player
Print the pictures using Photo Printing Wizard
View a slideshow of the images using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
Copy pictures to a folder on my computer using Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard 
Open folder to view files

OK Cancel
note: you can use others screen reader to confirm whether the menu pop-up or not. 

i hope this will clear things up.
again, i am telling the steps that i myself using and it is work beautifully.

i'm finding the same problem on my flash drive. nvda simply won't start.
when i hit the apps key to start nvda manually, i get "access is denied"
message.
i have removed other files on the flash drive thinking that they were the
culprits but still no go.

Chris, Are you sure you have a plain USB thumb drive? I tried the inf file 
you attached to your message and it did not work for me. I've found
bzillions of articles on the web that say autorun does not work on typical

I was waiting for somebody else to answer this question because all I
know
about it is from what I found out by googling for this topic after  we
discussed it last week. From what I read, you have to have a particular
type of flash drive for the autorun feature to work. It does not work on
most flash drives.

So you could buy another flash drive or you could just run nvda
manually.
It's still way, way easier to start than jaws.

for 550. That will put you right on the Plantronics 550 headset. It's

with shipping in the US.

If my advice doesn't apply to you, well, I'm sorry about that. But

cannot fine in my country and i've used several brand of
headset does need to install the manufactory driver in order to work. 

2. as i've said many time on this list, not all the computer have

But allan, nobody said *all* headsets work out of the box. I said a
specific
USB (not bluetooth) headset, the Plantronics 550, does not need a
driver.

If you plug in a supported headset, like the Plantronics 550, and
insert
a
CD built from the nvda CD image I created (see
http://www.math.wisc.edu/~jheim/nvda/), I believe you will get speech 
on
any
typically configured Windows XP computer without doing anything else. 
When
you're finished, you could close nvda, pop out the CD, and unplug the 
headset and the PC would be back to exactly the state it was in
before

began.

Well that would probably be a question better asked on the USB

manufacturers website, but yeah in most cases expect that if you

You need a USB headset.  I just bought one from newegg. Works
great.
You
plug it in, you get sound. Just the thing for machines w/o a sound 
card
or
where sound is misconfigured.

If you're interested, go to  www.newegg.com and search for
'plantronics
headset'. I got model 510. But I really wanted 500. They were out
of
stock
when I ordered.
