I would suggest, and I'm not trying to denigrate your husband nor his motives, that he learn what is reasonable and makes sense. There are almost no programs available for 64 bit versions of Windows, many drivers are not available, meaning that peripherals like scanners are hard to find and you probably won't benefit as a typical user by getting a 64 bit version of Windows for years. If you get a computer today and you won't benefit for five or six years by getting a 64 bit version of Windows, you aren't accomplishing anything meaningful by getting one now. You can spend almost two thousand dollars getting a very powerful computer that, for a typical user, provides no benefit. If your uses are for common purposes such as surfing the Internet, looking at e-mail, recording using an audio recording program, and other such nonintensive uses, you will do just as well getting a six or seven hundred dollar computer. People ought to learn something before they spend twice or more as much money as they need to. You shouldn't spend huge amounts of money for the best computer currently available now unless you need the best at this specific time. Most users do very well with a computer that is not nearly the best and loose no ability to do anything they want to do as a result. Unless you are doing video editing or are a gamer, running intensive gaming programs, or have specific computer intensive programs you need to run, which most people don't, you don't need an expensive extremely powerful computer. As Kim Komando pointed out this morning, most computer chips are far more powerful than is needed to run most software at this time. In other words, most software doesn't require anywhere near as much power as you will get with even a lower priced computer at this time. People should be rational about computers. Just because someone is buying a computer doesn't mean they give up their brains nor the ability to use them. Would you buy the most expensive most powerful car that is capable of performing on a race track for typical city and highway driving? Then why do the same when it comes to buying a computer?

A question best asked on a Window Eyes group, but I'm sure I heard an item
on acb radio saying that if it does not, it is in work.

Could one ask for what reason you want a 64 bit O/S exactly?

The 64 bit processor isn't a problem as long as you are running a 32 bit
operating systems (OS). JAWS and I believe Windows-eyes do NOT work
with Vista 64 bit since these packages apparently use some additional
hooks into the video driver. Microsoft completely changed the
underlying video system for the 64 bit OS.

After talking to some engineers at Jaws, I would suggest you change to
the 32 bit OS until everyone can catch up. Apparently the 64 bit
operating systems are substantially different and it will take some time
to catch up.

FYI, I'm getting old and crazy and I can't remember if NVDA ran on the
64 bit OS before I removed it. My recollection is it did. That would
make sense given that NVDA seems to solely rely on the accessibility
infrastructure (DOM and MSAA). As evidence of that, I can put NVDA on
ANY computer without adverse affects!!!! Wa hoooo!!!! This is not true
of JAWS. For example, I work with developers who use two monitors.
Since Jaws apparently puts hooks into the video system, one of the
monitors will stop responding.
