[nvda] Re: Windows Vista and NVDA

Well I'll just have to see for myself I guess. My dad just ordered me a Dell with Windows VISTA on it, and my parents are pretty sure it came but there was nobody home when UPS attempted the delivery so they are going to try again today. But I've heard mostly positive things about VISTA.

That's right that Vista was first OS which was accessible for blind people on the day it was released, but on the other hand what we as blind people can get from this operating system? Can we work on it comfortable like we work on xp? Well, I don't think so, first because of very bad audio support which is very important for us, specially if we are musicians. Most of the settings for sound cards under vista are very poor or there are even none of them. On creative sound cards you can't get the option what you hear to work, because it doesn't exist. That is only one example. Another think is Vista tweaking, I don't remember how much time I lost by reading various sites and documentation to get vista to look and feel similar to xp. And at the end, some of the features are gone, or they just don't work like the did. I don't know how is with the rest of the people but I just can't get used to vista menu and that all the thinks look like web. Its really annoying and takes to much time to get from one feature to another. And UAc ... I won't even mention it, its total none sense, no matter what Microsoft tells about security. If I have to click on one think for 3 4 times just to get it to work, its total waist of time and more advanced users really look stupid to answer on all of their questions. Yes on one side, window-eyes came out on the same day when vista was released, and that was really very good think if we look on it from the accessibility point of view , but as I said earlier, general stability and comfortable usage is currently in not so good shape.

The below message lacks some accuracy and fairness. Of course Windows is visual, all modern operating systems are. Of course you could use a totally non-graphical operating shell like DOS or the shell in Linux. Then you'd need to remember commands to type in. MS has made a great deal more effort in recent years to consider accessibility to their products. They worked with developers of adaptive software early on in their Vista development. They still do this. It's not perfect but it's really not fair and not the truth to say that they've forgotten about blind people and people with other disabilities. Blind users have been able to use Vista since it was released. Yeah, vista really sucks, i got vista business here on my computer at work which has duo core on 2.33 ghz with 4 gigs of ram and Hdd Seagate wraptor 160 gig , and vista is still slow. I personally if I get windows vista will turn off all that security stuff. I prefer to have control over my computer, and not letting the machine dictate to me what is secure and not secure. 
that's why antivirus and spyware removers exist.

That would depend on the type of dialogs you are talking about. For standard dialogs the command to read them is insert b. But Vista has done something quite strange. It seems that Vista on occasion will bring up little security dialogs that will disable certain operations of Windows until the dialog is confirmed. This does pose a problem for all of the screen readers because of the method Microsoft uses to draw the dialogs to the screen. I am not certain whether it disables keyboard control or what it actually does but I am curious if a person could use the standard commands for buttons in this case. For example if you have 2 buttons, one of them says yes and one of them says no, in most cases you can press alt y for the yes button and alt n for the no button. Not real sure if this still works for the security dialogs in Vista though. Is there anyone using Vista that can confirm this? As for the tree view that doesn't read correctly it could possibly be a non standard window class that NVDA just isn't aware of yet. On Sunday I got a new computer running Windows Vista Home. Knowing I have no jaws versions that work with Vista, I started Narrator to install NVDA 1235. I must commend the creators of NVDA for produceing such an excellent screen reader. I have not really missed JAWS up to the present, except for JAWS mouse movent to read the dialogs that popup and stay slient. I do not understand how to make NVDA read the popup windows and dialog screens. I also do not understand why NVDA will read all the tabs and buttons of CCleaner 2.01 and not the list views. Can anyone clearup NVDA's reading problems?
