[nvda] Re: Thunderbird, problem with the compose new message. window

Hi,

It's thoroughly preferable for accessibility work to be done in Thunderbird than in NVDA.

1. Although they are both open source projects, Thunderbird as part of the Mozilla project has people who are paid to work on it and the backing of a foundation which has existed for a number of years.

2. Implementation of a proper accessibility API in Thunderbird will mean proper access for other Windows Screen rEaders (should they choose to take advantage of it), plus screen readers for other operating systems such as Linux.

3. since there has already been some undertakings from the Mozilla folks that Iaccessible2 will be implemented, even prior to CSUN, the sensible approach, given the above, was to wait for this to happen.

As a screen reader project keen to implement Iaccessible2, and given the close co-operation with Mozilla already on access to Firefox, I'm sure that NVDA will be included in testing of Thunderbird's Iaccessible2 implementation, particularly once NVDA has implemented it.

Mick has stated before that implementing Iaccessible2 in NVDA has not been a high priority so far because there was nothing much to test it against. Now that IBM has released software which makes use of Iaccessible2, there is something to test an NVDA implementation of the Iaccessible2 standard against, so I wouldn't be surprised to see development move in this direction. This also means that once Mozilla do implement Iaccessible2 in Firefox and Thunderbird and other Mozilla software, getting NVDA to work with it should, at least in theory, happen all the quicker.

Geoff.
