[nvda] Re: Some random thoughts

Hi, just downloaded the latest build, and note the improvement of the voice over the old .5 version. It is less likely to make farting noises when interupted by another thing to speak now...grin...

Not sure why it was desired for it to say pane every time a pane is opened, but I suppose its OK once you get used to it.

Hi, thanks for the info. I use the release version for people I'm trying to entice into computers as its pretty stable. I have tried some of the other snapshots, but can only do this when time and brain permits, so to speak.

I understand about IE now. I guess if you can get a reliable system working with a reliable browser, then you can use the tricks learned for another one. I must say though, and this is a personal opinion, most people I'm trying to entice into computer use do not want to download another browser, and I'd have imagined getting it to work with an out of the box Windows might be more useful to many newbies with not enough cash for a commercial screen reader.

Re the beeps. I preferred the old ones myself. The new ones sound shrill and almost square wave like to me. However these are personal prefs of course.

Thanks for the tips on the web site.

With regard to posting. I just found that it was not obvious till I thought about it, that one needed to use a different address than that replying to the welcome message would give, that was all.

Many people out there are not used to lists, though I concede that anyone on this list should be, but there you are, just a thought.

I worked it out, but as I say, we all have blind spots not related to eyesight.

Which leads me to a possible bug when used with that IE program. I was browsing our uk Channel 5 listings and IE though it displays them, seems not to send them to nvda. You just get the main links and adverts. However, nvda on Firefox on the same page works.
The IE code is old and unmaintained at present, as we're focusing all of our efforts on Firefox. Once that is complete, we will consider reimplementing the IE support using the new framework we are currently developing for Firefox; see below.

Might I also make a suggestion that the list, this list, adds a bit to the welcome file explaining the posting address?
I'm not sure I follow.

Erm, what else, ah yes. I assume that long web pages seeming to lock the system up for long periods is due to the time it takes to get the info to nvda, as most commercial readers seem to be faster in this respect.
The slowness in loading long pages is mostly due to NVDA taking a while to render the page into a virtual buffer. The new virtual buffer code we are developing will make Firefox with NVDA many times faster. This is not yet available for general testing, but should be ready for general testing in the next few weeks.

Incidentally, on the latest build on the site, it seems that their beeps on progress bars are more numerous and louder.
I don't think they are more numerous, but they probably have a different, more audible tone in the latest snapshots. (I can't remember when we introduced this change.) Btw, when reporting an issue, please always test with the latest snapshot. 0.5 is very outdated now and is now unmaintained. We will eventually make another stable release, but that won't be for a few months yet.

I'm still trying to figure out how the bug fixing features tracking works. Should I be able to find some easy to browse list of these?
You can use the "View tickets" link to query the system by specifying various criteria. Alternatively, you can just use the search feature and select only tickets if you're only interested in bugs/issues. I'll probably introduce some links at some point so you can view all open tickets, etc.
