A U3 memory stick pretends to Windows that it is a CD drive, so
autorun operates without user intervention. When you insert a CD
Windows will do whatever the autorun.inf file says. When you insert a
USB stick Windows prompts first. So pretending you're a USB stick
allows U3 memory sticks to start up automatically.

They take slightly more work to configure or build.
