Another question concerning keyboard layout and object navigation. What is the power or advantage in object navigation as opposed to the way that JAWS and window eyes does it?
Apart from the reason already given (regarding the video intercept driver), in theory, object navigation arguably makes more sense to a non-visual use ranyway. The screen layout is obviously designed for efficient understanding by visual means; indeed, that is its entire purpose. Arguably, a hierarchical structure makes more sense for those of us who can't use that visual medium. In practise, this isn't entirely true, because it often seems to be quicker to gather information from a flat layout, as is demonstrated by the fact that we all prefer to read web pages as a flat virtual buffer. Also, many applications are not designed well in terms of hierarchical object structure. Anyway, this object approach is taken by many newer screen readers, including VoiceOver on the Mac and the various Gnome screen readers. I am not entirely sure on the position I take personally; I tend ot feel a bit of both is warranted. Thought I'd throw this out anyway as some food for thought.
