I did as you suggested ... actually i t was would I did before when you
mentioned the usefulness of system restore. Still only two restore
points--one for last night and one for this afternoon.

I'll review how this is done and send you instructions. But I want to
make absolutely sure that the check box that says show more restore points
is checked. If it isn't checked, you will only see one or two restore
points. My recollection is that every time I run System Restore, this
check box starts out not being checked. If the check box is unchecked,
check it then tab back to the list of restore points and see if you can
see more of them. You may have already done this but I'm discussing this
further because I don't know exactly what you have done and I want to make
sure there are only two restore points available. I'd rather overemphasize
a point than have it be overlooked so I hope it doesn't bother you that
I'm emphasizing it.
I'm quite sure you will have to reactivate JAWS if you restore to the
factory state of the computer, or as it may be called, the out of box
state of the computer.

Thanks. I would greatly appreciate knowing how to increase the number
of
restore points. As I understand it, there should be at least a month's
worth
of restore points--even In XP with mediocre system restore I can recall
having as many as three or four months' worth of restore points. System
restore for a lot of people is something that's forgotten until something
comes up--the first time I used it was a week ago when uninstalling Lotus.
One last question for anyone in the know--if I restore my computer to
factory settings, do I have to reinitialize authorization for Jaws or
would
backing up everything to my external hard drive be sufficient?

Subject: [nvda] Re: Problems with NVDA and HP laptop
You already have the problem. If you back everything up, you will just be
backing up the problem.
The easiest solution and perhaps the most trouble free one to implement is
to restore your computer to the original factory state. Your manual has
instructions for how to do this. You will need sighted assistance to do
so. Your computer has the original factory state of the system already
available on a partition of the hard drive set aside for this purpose.
You will loose all of your files so if you have created data files you
don't want to loose, back them up first to an external drive or cds or to
some other removable media. then start over and reinstall your hardware
once you have returned the computer to the factory state. And this time,
make sure System Restore is set to keep a reasonable number of restore
points before doing much of anything. Install the screen-reader, of
course, then check to see if System Restore is set to use a reasonable
amount of disk space.
Regarding your question in your previous message about how many restore
points are saved, did you check the checkbox that says something like show
more restore points? If you did and you still see only two restore
points, then it appears that some idiot set your system restore to use so
little disk space that it isn't keeping nearly as many as it should by
default. I can't tell you just how many you should have accumulated
before the oldest ones begin to be deleted when new points are made. It's
a percentage of disk space and that's how you set the setting, by
percentage. but if you don't have a reasonable number of restore points,
then your system restore may be set up in an almost useless way.
If the check box is checked and you still have only two restore points
available, I'll tell you how to increase the number if you want to know.
That won't solve your current problem but it may help next time. I would
strongly advise you and anyone else who hasn't done this to make sure
system Restore is creating restore points and is creating a reasonable
number. Especially if you use Vista or Windows 7, where System Restore is
reliable and powerful, this is an important precaution.

How would I go about backing up and reformatting? I'm using Jaws at
the
moment.

I suggest you back up all your files, then use the recovery procedure
to reformat the box.
you can defrag, check the disk to and do the sfc from the os.
Hp seems to load a lot of crapware on their boxes, one reason why I
won't be setting myself up with one ever.
Dell loads crapware but its not to bad, toshiba does to but about 50%
is actually usefull if not accessable and whats left can be easily
killed.

(Actually, I'm not positive it's Lotus--an equal possibility is HP is
blocking the program somehow.) How would I use all of those features-
minus disc defragmentor and keeping in mind that right now I
don’t have
a backup disk or Windows CD?

well reinstall the hp software and the lotus though I have used and
killed lotus and things work ok.
And then there is sfc /scannow.
And failing that there is your disk image which you shouldn't have
any issue with because win7 has one.
And then ofcause you could repair windows with the cd, or reinstall
ie from add remove programs, downgrade ie then reinstall it and firefox.
Then there is defragging your hard disk or scanning it with antivirus
and malware software and for disk errors.
I had some issues where things did not work right on another box,
there was some disk error on it.
THe drive needed replacing in the end.
Then there is reformat, though you could always repeat your mistake.
I usually try to kill any extranius software before I really start to
load anything.

last thing I tried--so the point about the users who forget its there
still stands.

I agree.
Several months ago, an automatic update to something on xp caused a
long
delay when open "MyComputer" window.
It would hang for several minutes before the list appears.
Using system restore, to the time before the update occurred, did the
trick.

Everything except the very first thing you should have tried. Run a
system restore point from before you installed Lotus Symphony.
It's amazing how many computer users don't try System Restore for
various
problems. I know that the XP version of System Restore didn't work
reliable for many people but the Vista and Windows 7 versions are much
more reliable and powerful.
