Hello,
you can contact me privately and take this off list if you like.
It seems to me that the problem is that the laptop has a sata hard drive and
Microsoft Windows doesn't have a driver for this in the text mode part of
setup.
You need to find the driver, press F6 during the boot and add the driver
manually provided there is one of course for Microsoft Windows XP.

I've had it say that it does not recognise the drive, and it seems xp has
some issues if the drive is over a certain size. Normally, the motherboard
manufacturer will have some cd or floppy bootable utility to sort it out,
but I've no idea about laptops etc.

Hmm.
not actually able to tell you what is going to happen when you move to xp
again, however you will have to find the drivers and software for xp for
your hardware and that can actually be a bit hard depending on the age of
the hardware.
