Hi Portia,
The reason for that odd behavior of NVDA in some of Skype's and in
Avast's menus is the same - the menus are not ... how to say it ...
standardized. The MSAA text on witch NVDA relies is empty in those
unreadable by NVDA menus. If you turn the accessibility options in
Skype, most of the menus of Skype will be readable by NVDA - I've just
tested it myself. The only unreadable menus now are the ones for the
status changing, but in this case you just go to the button that says
your current status, press spacebar to activate it and NVDA reads it and
you can change your Skype status from there. The currently activated
status is checked and unavailable and NVDA reads this as I have written it.
About Avast: I haven't used it since a long time ago. But if I remember
correctly, the menus in the "standard view" of Avast are not iconized,
but they use some special "style", similar to Office XP or something
like that and that might be the reason for NVDA not reading them.
Unfortunately, I don't know of a workaround for this problem with Avast.
And that makes me sometimes think about some things about programs: Why
do programmers do their applications (like antivirus software, CD/DVD
burning software etc.) so "shiny" instead of more usable and functional?
Well ... In my opinion, after all those kind of programs are PC tools
and not something for fun and relaxation what the music and video
players are in general. For the players and such is normal to have more
shiny and beautiful interface, but it is not so normal for programs like
antivirus and CD/DVD burning ones to be like that.
Well ... that is all from me for now. And sorry, if my letter got a
little bit longer.
P.S.: If you don't know how to turn on accessibility options in Skype -
just ask and someone from here will probably answer you.
Best wishes!

Hi,
in some menus NVDA behaves incorrectly:
It doesn't speak the menu items, just its state or its position within
the structure:
For example: "unavailable" "x of y", where "x" is the actual position
of the item, and "y" is the number of items at all.
However I don't hear the title of the item, so it's impossible to
navigate.
It happens in Cute-FTP and in the menu of the Avira virus scanner.
It may happen in other programs, but this is what I've figured out.
Is this known? What to do to work around it?
Hermann
