[nvda] Re: New Member and question

I can't help much with object navigation as I am struggling to understand that concept myself still but the same widnows keyboard navigation commands work with nvda that work with jaws.

winkey+m minimizes all applications and puts focus on the desktop and wikey+d toggles focus back and forth between your current applications.

All the windows keystrokes that you could use in jaws to get places also work with nvda. You need to differentiate between widnows and screenreader specific commands hthough.

For example, winkey+m is a windows command as is winkey+e to open windows explorer .

however, jawskey+f12 is a jaws command to announce the system time. sometimes there is both a jaws and a widnows command to accomplish similar things.

IN windows xp and up, winkey+b puts focus into the system tray.the jaws command jawskey+ff11 is similar in functionality in that it focuses jaws on the system tray and puts the system tray icons into a list box for you to access. Widnow eyes has a similar screenreader specific keystroke to access the system tray - ctrl+shift+s, I believe.

You might want to get a list of windows keyboard navigation commands as all of those will work independent of whatever screenreader you use.

Yes, nvda will work with allflavors of windows from xp and up, i.e. xp, 2k3 and vista regardless whehter it is a consumer or business version of the operating system. I think nvdamight also work on windows 2k but am not positive of that and do not have access to a box running 2k currently. Maybe our developers can comment on that.

Cheers,

Doris

Hello,
My name is Erin, and I am a new user of NVDA. I love it! I think I am somewhat dense, though, as I don't really understand how objects work and relate to one another. I've read the user guide, but I'm still not getting it. I'm sorry I can't be more specific in the information I want, but I'm unsure how they all fit together and what are considered "objects".

My most immediate question concerning navigating within NVDA is how I would get to the desktop if I was working within a program such as OE. With JAWS for instance it is Windows+m. But how do I navigate the object list tree in NVDA to get there?

Also, on another tack, when the user guide says that NVDA works with "the Windows Operating System", does this mean that it works with all Windows platforms e.g. Vista, XP Home, XP Pro, etc?

Thanks for any help.

Erin
