[nvda] Re: New Member and question

Hi, Gene,
Thank you for your help; trying to navigate through My Computer with object navigation sounds like an interesting way to experiment. I'll give it a try.

Object navigation is not intended to replace standard navigation methods and commands. You go to the desktop exactly as you would with JAWS. That command, Windows key m, is a Windows command. It works regardless of screen-reader being used. Object navigation is intended to be used when standard Windows, program, and screen-reader navigation commands don't work. It is somewhat analogous to using the JAWS cursor but you use it differently because moving from object to object is different in organization than looking at a screen using the JAWS cursor. Someone else who is more familiar with object navigation may be able to give you a good description of how this is done. I can do it but I'm not sure just how one would describe how nor if this description can be written clearly. I'd advise getting a feel for it by doing the following:
I am assuming you are using XP in this description:
Open My Computer.
Move to the c drive but don't open it.
Open the properties for the c drive.
Use the object navigation commands numpad insert 2 and numpad insert 8 to move from object to object. Once you move to an object, Use the screen review commands as well as numpad insert 4 and numpad insert 6 to move. If you see something that looks like an object, such as when you hear the word pane or hear somethink like My Computer Pane, or perhaps hear the name of a dialog or whatever implies an object, try using numpad insert 2 and numpad insert 8 followed by other movement keys to see what happens. While others may provide good descriptions, as I said, you may need to experiment in this way to really understand how to work with object navigation.
