Well this is similar to the weird problem of nvda not seeing the config
file sometimes when started from command prompt or batch file, but once
altered its ffine again.
I suspect Windows environment storage at work, but on your problem, I
wonder if it might be something to do with virus scanners. I have a dim
light in the back of my mind that this focus loss effect was traced toAvast
on another group with another screenreader. To do with transparent windows
or something. Most odd. Its not Avast for me, I use nvg.

Subject: [nvda] NVDA portable
Hello list members. I've been noticing an odd problem with both the
installed and portable version of NVDA. JUst after installing a new
snapshot version onto my hard disk or copying a portable version into my
USB thumb drive NVDA's menu will come up but will not function at all.
NVDA reports that the menu has focus but will not allow me to navigate the
menu options and change settings, etc. NVDA itself works fine but this is
odd. This problem continues until I restart my computer. I've tried
restarting NVDA but it doesn't fix it. This does not happen each and every
time I install or copy a portable version, it seems totally random.
Sometimes it happens, and at other times it's fine. The log doesn't show
anything but the usual. Is this a windows problem, simply not seeing a
file or something, or is this NVDA? This is not a complaint, I'm just not
sure what is causing this. Should I set the ligging level to debug, maybe
that would help?
Thanks
Kendell
