Just to add my two cents, I don't think your choice of source host
should be determined by visibility reasons, but rather based on how easy
it is to navigate the hosting site, how easy it is to submit patches,
track bugs, and so on. SourceForge may be reliable, but personally, I've
never found it terribly easy to use SourceForge for anything, even
downloading stuff. Still, your mileage may vary.
I think there are more effective ways to increase visibility, such as an
improved homepage, links from friendly organizations, podcast reviews,
and just generally mentioning NVDA at any opportunity to anybody who
will listen. ;)
>From a practical perspective, I suggest you look into making it possible
for people to set up cash bounties so that people can get paid to fix
things. Something like:
http://www.gnome.org/bounties/
and
https://launchpad.net/bounties/
Public agencies are throwing a lot of money around in this field:

It would nice to see more of that money contributing to FOSS solutions.
I suspect the key barriers to adoption won't be publicity, but:
1) Narrow support for software and hardware
2) Lack of a telephone support line
With regards to software support, in attempting Gecko support NVDA is
already more ambitious than Thunder, its most immediate rival (and
soon-to-be open source itself).
Once the codebase is more mature, you might think about whether you'd
like to offer contracts for corporate technical support.
