[nvda] Re: NVDA commands for laptops

I've used laptops for about 7 or 8 years now. I've used Jaws, Window Bridge, and Window-eyes extensively and played around with Hal. Now NVDA, but I gota tell yah, I haven't ever found a laptop layout where I thought, "Yes! This is the way!"

My fave solution is to apply the laptop fn key and turn the right hand side of my keybord into a number pad.
M=0
,=decimal point
/=devide
J=1
K=2
L=3
U=4
I=5
O=6
7=7
8=8
9=9
0=*
The drawbacks are that it doesn't work on one or two per sent of all the laptops in existance, it doesn't work necessarily the same way on all laptops, and most important, it's a bitch to get the feel of. That's what it ammounted to for me. I couldn't learn to be effective doing this. It all comes from the fingers. In order to do the layout just now I had to stop and touch evry key. It isn't a natural feeling at all.

It has going for it an almost universal standardization, You don't need to learn one layout for desktop and one for laptop. You don't need to do two step-by-steps one for desktop and one for laptop. You are not going to find a screen reader with a more flexible laptop layout. You don't have to cary around a number pad. The system applies across the bord to all screen readers,no matter what their desktop layout is.

As difficult as it is to get the feel of, I use so many different laptops at this point that the flexibility it offers me just can't be beat.

Best,

Erik
