My evil thought you see, was thinking along the lines of enabling narrator near start up and then having code in nvda to shut it as nvda opens...

If you look for the MSSAPI for windows XP installation, you can generally
find one that includes MS mike and mary, which while not perfect, are both a
bit better than sam.

For example, I think you can find the download therefor on:
http://www.kitchensinc.net/

On that site, click on the link for:
click here for free windows sapi5 text to speech games

And there you'll find installation downloads for both a SAPI 5 repair
installation, and a version including the other two voices, and you can
then, in the control panel, speech dialogue, on the text to speech tab
choose your default voice.

Will also just say that apart from using these voices for some parts of
things like audio quake, and some other games, the narrator is a basically
last resort backup thing.

Stay well

Yes, but stupid Narrator is the only way to do the log in reliably if you
have a log in, which I no longer bother with.
This is where we came in!

actually if you knew what you were doing you could point ms sam to
another voice as long as you knew where to go.
HOwever I'll leave that up to someone else to try to hack that out.
Right now I am just happy I have the system stable.
I don't use stupid narator i use nvda.

hmmm.
not as easy as it sounds unless ofcause you want to install on another
system all the voices then copy them accross or get someone to give you
their reg key.
Issue is you have to edit it and sometimes transfer things around.
its just time thats all.
though I am happy I got it done.

I am not sure if I've missed an instalment in this saga. I thought it
was just fixed on Sam as it came. To me with all the other
ramifications of reformatting and reinstalling other software and
drivers, the registry patch sounds positively easy!

hmmm.
on that note solved the sapi issue.
It is a load of work to do.
you firstly need to go to hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft
then delete the speech key
you need to back that up first though.
then get another key from a computer with the same os and put that
one back in.
the other way is to copy the key from another system after loading all
voices on it.
Even with my way I had to reinstall some voices.
The big issue is you need to put all voices in order which means
moving and pasting loads on loads of code and transfers of code in
notepad.
Usually I would have reformatted.
But for the fact my rec cds have gone walk about and the other that my
external hdd has a case power issue I had to actually do the work.

Assuming that narrator is on in the utility manager to start with of
course.

At this time no. You'll have to use Narrator or a commercial
screen reader.

Is there a way to make NVDA speak on the Windows login screen?
