I know what the "in link" and "out of link" messages mean; I just wanted to be crystal clear as to what I was hearing. Thank you for letting me know about the screen layout toggle.

This is NVDA's default behavior. NVDA is reporting link boundaries in a way so you know when you have arrowed into a link and also you are notified when you leaved a link. NVDA uses the same layout that sighted people can see on the screen. So if there are actually more than one links within a line NVDA presents it so. If you want to change you can use NVDA+v command to toggle screen layout. Also this can be controlled from the virtual buffer settings dialog.
