[nvda] Re: More NVDA promoting

$400 was a typo, meant $4000...my system is running sluggishly, wonder if something has been updating, or if I have some garbage left over from the game my kid was playing...lol. I wrote US dollars, and so my $400 was correct for the basic cost of licenses goes, and later I gave the example of $500 to handle some extra organizational costs in the sales/promo of such a thing/200 licenses....My point being if there was plenty of money, one could take a chance on losing $1000-$2000, or at least having to wait a year or two for the return. So, now I have the question, if Jamie and Mick are receiving union rate pay all of the time, where does this money come from? Are grants for work on certain programs or features channeled in to a fund that is supplemented by ??? when this doesn't cover basic salary? Or alternatively if basic salary is always covered for the devs, then just how is any grant used, and lastly, how much or little comes in from individual donations? I suspect a careful inspection of the NVDA site could answer some of these questions, but I've never gone down the right rabbit hole to find this out. I also suspect many others on this list would be interested in a quick overview, and I think you just may be the man who could help us with this. (hope so anyway) Thanks much for all of your clarifications/when I start filtering out most of this list for lack of time, I'll will put in an exception for your msgs...G
grin....

this is a question I've answered before, and think has been addressed

I do want to stress that Mick and Jamie are employed under a standard
industry award. This concept may be foreign to those in non-unionised
countries, but in short it means that they are receiving
industry-standard pay and conditions. Now that's not to say that they
couldn't earn more working for someone else. What I am saying is that
they aren't earning less than the going rate for this kind of work in
Australia.

One last thing: if there was money, and in the big picture not so
much, the org could put out $400 |American to purchase eloquence
licenses with out being worried that perhaps the money would not come
back quickly....

Not sure if that was a typo, but given Jamie's post on this, NV Access
would need to put out $4500 for 300 elloquence licenses. Not only would
there need to be a return on the investment, but there would also need
to be work put in to fascilitate the actual sale of these licenses and
any necessary support. So not only is there a cost for the licenses but
also for the time needed to program webpages for selling licesnes etc,
rather than working on NVDA. And NV Access would have to weigh the costs
of doing this against the likelihood that they would get their money back.

To illustrate this, how much would people pay for Elloquence? Burt
mentioned $25. At that price, NV Access would need to sell 180 of its
300 licenses just to break even on license fees alone. Selling all 300
licenses would represent a gross income of $7500. Take off that the cost
for licenses ($4500), minus other establishment costs for setting up
sales and support for it, and there won't be much left.

Geoff.
