Very nice work. Just one thought while I am reading this message:

You should still be able to do:
import virtualBuffers
even from within modules in the virtualBuffers directory, so this isn't
strictly necessary. However, I can understand why that might seem a bit
strange, so do as you feel best. Just thought I'd point this out. What
you've done probably makes a bit more sense.
