[nvda] Re: Is there a ticket for announcement of headings,,Frames, links etc when loading a new page with IE and Firefox?

Hi there

I think there had been a ticket, but got closed. along with the one when you run out of heaings and it wraps to the top of the page again. Personally I don't mind the feature or it letting me know, but then if I do insert and F7 it lets me know how many headings, links, landmarks there are. You can always do a ticket, but do a search first just in case, maybe the other ticket was a duplicate.

Hi,

I can file a ticket on this, is there anyone else who actually wants this? It'll be more effective if more than two people say it might be useful.

Also, another thing to keep in mind is Braille. Should we flash the message "page has x headings, y forms, and z links," or are Braille-only users not going to want this sort of thing being displayed. Of course, then it becomes the land of too many options for efficient use, then you've gotta re-design your GUI to harness the power of such options (example: JFW 12 and Wineyes 7.5 both have totally reworked configuration managers with a treeview of about a billion options), and then it becomes a task to maintain the GUI aspect of all these options rather than focusing on the important stuff, like stability and the speed of the screen reader on all counts.

I'm not against adding features that are useful, but at the same time, one seemingly small feature can turn into a whole string of things rapidly.

And if we get this implemented, what about sound schemes for web pages, custom labeling, and maybe a startup wizzard for fun?

Hi Gene, thanks for your comment. I didn't think of it like that. I'm sorry if I've offended some people on hear indeed I was thinking of the Jaws way of things where by it tells you how many elements are on a page when it loads. I do genually find this to be useful for me but that's just a personal preference. I am happy with the way NVDA handles web browsing I just wondering if there was a ticket that's all and for it to be maybe considered for the future. Also bearing in mind that it doesn't have to be turned on by default. Like I said though I'm happy with NVDA and just nearly asked this out of curiosity it being created ticket wise.

Thanks

Daniel

I see no reason to have such information for my own browsing. However,
even though I don't think anyone needs such information, it may be useful
to some people in the following way:
If you are looking at a web page and want to guess about what the most
efficient way may be to move quickly through the page to find sections you want to read, some users may find it helpful to know how many headers are on the page. A long page with three headings is far less likely to allow for detailed efficient movement by use of headings and the user may wish
to try other methods first such as the skip links command or the search
dialog. On the other hand, if there are twenty headings on the page, the user may want to try move by heading as the first way to move. Similarly, I don't care about hearing how many landmarks are on a page and don't wish to hear that information. But some people may find it useful. Obviously, the information should be able to be turned off and there is a question as to what, if any of these structures should be announced by default. But requesting that the ability to have such information announced be included
in NVDA is a legitimate request.

Over and over, when someone asks for something other screen-readers do and NVDA does not, someone or more than one person says that NVDA should not
immitate other screen-readers. That is not a logical response. Other
screen-readers should be imitated where imitation serves a valid purpose.
the question isn't whether NVDA immitates other screen-readers. The
question is whether a specific feature or related set of features serves a valid purpose, regardless of who else incorporates them or does not do so.

The extra speech is obnoctious and I"d probably turn that feature off as
soon as it was implemented. Let's not copy every other screen reader.
Let's be efficient.
