[nvda] Re: Device Manager (was Re: Re: nvda and OCR software)

What NVDA and System Access are reading is the description property in MSAA. Jaws and others do filter out the description property for many things for the simple reason of it does make speech a bit too wordy in some cases. But yeah there are a number of properties that are exposed through MSAA, like the Name, State of an object and its role, meaning is it a button checkbox etc. The state property is the information like is a checkbox checked or unchecked or is a menu item active or inactive. The description property is usually extra information about a focused object or in some cases it can also be used as the name. In the case of Skype 3 and above, NVDA in the options screen can read the item that is selected in the list view general, sounds etc. but because of the description property it can also read extra information describing what the possible options are in a certain section or what the list item is used for. I hope I at least made a little sense to some. If I didn't then please forgive my programmer's speak.

maybe however I hate automation as a rule of anything.
so much can go wrong.
Don't get me wrong, I like automation as something but I also like manual controls as well, I have to go to properties of the divice with jaws or hal and tab once and it tells me the status.

Hi, just changed the subject line to reflect the new thread. In terms of
this, surely that's a good thing? Would it not be better if you were
automatically informed that a device, for example, wasn't functioning? Just
a thought.

Here is something interesting. I just tried Device Manager with System
Access from Sarotek (spelling.) I found that it also says this device is
working properly every time you move in any way in the treeview. I am very suspicious that this is an artifact of using MSAA to access treeviews which
I believe both System Access and NVDA do and does not indicate the true
state of items.
