Is it possible that you could install the sapi5 eSpeak version, so that you
can get the commandline version of eSpeak. Then you could try running that
and see if you get speech. This commandline version does not depend on sapi5
either, so it will be interesting to see if it speaks.

Hi mick,
Nope. This system is a laptop that my school uses with only one card.
NVDA does not seem to fall back to any synthesizer... All that happens is
I choose espeak from the synth list, press enter, but no sound comes out.
However, I am running JAWS while doing this. But if I start NVDA after I
unload JAWS, the same issue happens. This system also does not have admin
rights, since I'm known as a student, not a teacher / admin.
It's running win 2k pro sp4.

I assume you mean that when you start NVDA for the first time, or set to
espeak it falls back to the silence synthesizer?
What about when you choose it from the synthesizer dialog (perhaps already
running sapi4)?
If there is a major error in the driver, it should get written to
debug.log.
Also, how many soundcards do you have in that computer? is it possible
that
your default soundcard is not the one you're listening to things on?
I don't think it has anything to do with sapi5, but obviously some dll it
needs.
Just some thoughts
Mick

Hi! Another bug I found with nvda r618 is that e-speak will not work at
all on windows 2000 service pack 4 with sapi5 not installed. Win 2k
system
do not come with sapi5, only with sapi4. The driver seems to load ok
(without any errors), but there's no speech.
Hope this gets fixed, since most Hungarian people still seem to run
win2k.
:)

Also I found an ishue on ESpeak driver where it makes clicks and pops

because of a
sound card driver or ESpeak driver.
perhaps this maybe cause by your sound card driver.
